What sort of shade is it? Try looking in your local library - there are usually books on home decorating, soft furnishings etc - I learnt to make some curtains out of one.
Also, I am so intrigued I have to ask, how did you crochet a rug out of a duvet?. As for the crochet rug i got an old duvet and cut it into strips about an inch wide then used it as you would wool and crochet with a 20mm crochet hook. I have also tried braiding a rug which is looking nice but taking much longer than crocheting. xx

Thank you all so much for the filing cabinet advice! I now feel as if I could make it look beautiful. Just bought myself a whole pile of bargain wool so I can knit a throw for the winter, choose lots of lovely colours. Making that and a few draught excluders for the house to add a more personal touch!Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0

Hi FireOpal,
sounds as though your shade is fabric, so I'm sure that you could find a useful book in the library to help you.
What a brilliant idea to crochet strips of fabric for a rug - did you have any problems with fraying or did the crochet tighten everything up enough to prevent this?0 -
Hi there, haven't actually tried it yet, but I thought I'd try to use car retouching spray paint on my old and battered filing cabinet. I want the lovely enamelled look.
Many years ago they worked a treat on the faberge style egg crafting hobby.

Hiya well first i did a braided rug and used some pretty flannel sheets with a normal pink cotton sheet. The flannel didnt fray but the pink sheet did but i cut all those bits off and then as i plaited it it was fine, you can then weave the plaited strips or roll them all round to form a cute round rug but you would have to stitch a little as you go to hold it in place.
The crochet rug i used normal cotton duvet i left it double so the strips were thick enough abit like using 2 bits. This does fray but i used pinking shears and its just little bits that come off.The crochet holds it all together but little bits are coming off.Im gonna put it in the washing machine and see what happens(thats the beauty of these there easily washed. I used a 20mm crochet hook but you may get away with 15mm im not sure. Also when the strips are cut because i left them double they were looped at each end so once i crochet that bit i cut one end of the next bit and tied it in the loop to form a knot and make a continuous strip. Most of the knots are at the back or pushed through. I hope this all makes sense im so exhausted today im not up to re reading so fingers crossed.
Also went to a car boot this morning and an old couple were selling a white wicker chair for £10 i managed to get it down to £7:T and when we got it to the car it said Lloyd Loom on the bottom yay yay yay :j:j:j0 -
Have acquired a Lloyd Loom "lusty" laundry box - hinged lid with some horrid fabric on ...it is a greeny gold colour with little ball sort of feet ...... am poss going to sell it - do you think it is worth replacing the fabric on top? It is in excellent condition otherwise
Hoping someone can help! x:jPobodys Nerfect:j0 -
For the filing cabinet, clean it with all your might, use vim or ajax cream cleaner and make sure it's totally rinsed and dry it in case of spots of paint that may come off and introduce rust.
Then invest in plastikote spray. For a four drawer cabinet you might need 2 big cans which are about £6 each.
Do this outside, put said cabinet onto newspaper (do the drawers separately).
First give a light coating, it may look sparse in places but this is all good as you are giving it an initial key (something for paint to stick to)
Let dry, I usually leave about 30 mins but hubs always says one hour, then coat again with a light spray. After a few coats you will be able to see absolute colour. Finally, after all of that I would coat with plastikotes varnish which comes in matt/silk/satin/gloss. 2 coats and if you bump it whilst putting it back in the house it will not be damaged.0 -
