Anyone ever painted a filing cabinet? I have inherited an old standard office grey one and was going to brighten it up to suit my home, will that work or is there no point?

I bought a metal one from argos some years back and painted it with Hammerite smooth paint in a sort of brassy colour............sounds awful but actually looks good and suits the room its in.

Now I'm currently trying to re-organise our front room -its just been re-painted, I've had a de-clutter of 'stuff' that was on the walls so it's all looking a bit 'naff' at the minute. I must admit I have a soft spot for 'rustic clutter' and the room does lend itself to that..........looks too empty without it.
Shop in town sells a lot of French style country type stuff so I'll have a look tomorrow and see if there's anything that says 'but me buy me !'............lol
I would be unstoppable if only I could get started !

This thread is wonderful your all very clever. Me and my boyfriend are moving into our first home and it needs all the carpets removed and old wallpaper etc so lots to do. We have a very very small budget and i love the shabby chic look so if i can find cheap furniture to paint up it would be wonderful. So far i have crochet a rug out of an old duvet and found a nest of tables for £10 in a charity shop, they have thin but ornate legs and glass tops. Im thinking of painting them cream and then using some anna griffin craft paper under the glass.

Id like some help with a question please i have seen a blue loyd loomish chair i was wondering would it be possible to paint it and how? id rather not spray paint if possible but if i use a brush and normal paint will it get in all the bits?

Yes, I did. I bought an old grey one from the recycling centre, took the drawers out and spray painted it, done a brilliant job, there is a picture of it somewhere on the old shabby chic thread, I will try and find it.

I never spray painted before but I just bought 2 tins, sandpapered the filing cabinet a bit, wiped it clean and sprayed it, you have to build it up, I did it in three layers, I think in the end I bought another tin, so three spraypaint tins in total. Even my teenage daughters had a go.

    Go for it

Hi, I've had my Granny's old lloyd loomchair for about 25 years and have painted it a few times and it's been fine!

i painted a large filing cabinet I was given, to match a large cupboard I bought out of the local newspaper for £10.

I sanded them both, primed the bare areas on the filing cabinet with a metal/wood Dulux primer and then painted them both with Dulux satinwood in grey(2 coats) and then ragged a pale blue on top.

They have lasted me for years but were moved to the garage on moving into my present home two years ago as I have built in furniture in my present office/study. The filing cabinet now contains potatoes and various fruits I collect for home brewing as it is cool and dark out in the garage. I find ragging can hide a multidude of chips and irregularities.

What sort of shade is it? Try looking in your local library - there are usually books on home decorating, soft furnishings etc - I learnt to make some curtains out of one.

Also, I am so intrigued I have to ask, how did you crochet a rug out of a duvet?
