Stuff always goes too quick on my local Freecycle - you usually get the offer email and the taken email through together - how do people do that?

i've noticed that as well! i saw a blender advertised yesterday, that was both offered and taken at the same time.
i've noticed that a lot of people placing wanted ads post the same msg about 3 times a day as well

We can't post within 30 days of posting a wanted ad which is annoying as the msgs get lost so quickly. I really need an additional freezer - don't care on the state as it'llbe in the garage, but they all go so quick and although I posted a wanted a couple of weeks ao, I cant do another one for another fortnight!

Wow the dresser looks amazing, can i ask did you use a primer first or did you sand it down. I am trying to buy a dresser on ebay, but i'm worried if i paint it, i'll make a hash of it ......thanks jess

    Hi Jess
I gave it a really good scrub first with hot water & plenty of washing soda and a green scrubby pan scourer, rinse then let it dry completely then sanded it with a coarse sandpaper, then a thin first coat of oil eggshell. I always use farrow & ball bit more expensive but definately worth it and no primer so save cash that way. (A 750mls tin is £13.50 and was plenty for my dresser have just under 1/2 tin left to paint other stuff with). Then when the first coat is completely dry (it will look a bit patchy) go over with wet & dry sandpaper, use it wet, give it a good wipe clean let it dry and paint another coat...repeat if you want. I did my kitchen cupboards this way and they have stood up to allsorts with no signs of wear. Hope this helps and remember you can't hash it completely you can just sand it down and start again......Good Luck
    simplicity is key

  • makes me laugh what some people ask for though- one lady is asking for a dyson in working order- if i had one of those i would keep it for life, not give it away!

After 10 years of dyson hell (4 different models) if I had another one I would quite happily give mine away...worst hoovers I have ever owned....now my sebo thats another story:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

I help moderate a freecycle group and we do encourage members to wait before offering an item, but unfortunately some don't, some have no choice if the item is having to sit outside etc, some people do sit all day online so they can reply straight away.

Also because people don't replace things constantly and most of the time only replace once broken electrical items like freezers, washers etc are not offered very often. Many people would prefer to sell an old item in a free ads paper or on ebay than give it away free, in all honesty can't blame them for wanting something back when they paid several hundred pounds for some things (my old FF cost me £30 from free ads paper and was months old)

These are some of the items I offered in the last few months just to give you an idea of the responses I got before stating it was taken

    Car minidisc player 32 replies
    Shed 18 replies
    Microwave 16 replies

Unfortunately I had one of each item to give away so had to choose one person to give it to. I would have sold the microwave if I'd had the time and was not busy moving.

Increasing number of wanted adverts for expensive items have also been a reason given by people as to why they are not interested in using Freecycle. Another reason is rude replies from members when offering an item, I've had many of them myself like 'deliver it to **** before 6pm tonight' or 'I'll av it like send me ya addy and I'll come now' as a response to an offer, I wouldn't dream of replying like that myself.

Oh and I love my Dyson, they also do a service thing where you can pay £65 inc all parts and labour to have them repaired which is far cheaper than replacing it so I'll probably have mine forever and keep getting it fixed.
One day I might be more organised...........

Some people on our freecycle now wait before choosing the lucky recipient to give more people a chance to show their interest. A lot fairer I think.
