I'm in the Gloucestershire group. I admit to joining in order to get free stuff... I moved here from America with a toddler, and am now expecting another baby. I had to leave all my son's toys and baby stuff behind, so I appreciated the chance to get the things I needed. We're going through bankruptcy and it's a real relief to have the baby's crib, car seat, high chair, and other things already sorted.

I initially felt as if I didn't have anything to offer. Then, we had a problem in one of our shops with waaaay to many cardboard boxes collecting in the basement. My husband didn't want to pay the commercial rate to use the tip and our business name was on all of them. We were getting about five a week and the landlord was getting upset because they were blocking fire exits.

So, I put them on freecycle - which is full of people who are in the process of moving house - and ALL the boxes were gone in 24 hours!

Then, when we closed the shops down, we had to get our stuff out of there ASAP. The landlord was being fairly decent about us breaking the lease, so I thought it would be nice to try and clear things out.

    This morning, I gave away:

    a fax machine
    a cash register
    a metal utility shelf/bookcase
    a greeting card spinner
    another spinning display stand
and something else I can't remember just now

Tomorow, someone is to pick up a swivel chair and two other greeting card spinners.

We've still got a full-sized filing cabinet, four wooden tables, and a TON of shelving fixtures to give away. I'm going to relist those tonight.

Today, I also handed out Freecycle flyers at the Gloucester Vegan Fayre and met some nice people... one man is going to bring me a sewing machine -something I've been wanting.

I'm thinking of placing my first "wanted" ad: I'd like to get some cloth diapers and I'm not too picky to use used ones!

This web site enables local groups to recycle anything for FREE. From kids clothes to kitchen sinks! It's a great money saving system - and you feel good as recycling helps the planet. You can offer stuff you don't want anymore or ask if others have particular items. It works!
  • I am also a fan of Freecycle. I have passed on lots of stuff, and when my son's bicycle got broken was lucky enough to see one offered shortly afterwards. It's a great way to dispose of large items too big for a charity shop, but too good to dump - there are a lot of needy people out there who can benefit eg. single parent households.

one man's rubbish is another man's treasure :D

Have used Freecycle to pass on a number of large items that would otherwise be in a landfill.
  • Yes its brilliant. If there isn't a local one-ask to start one! That's what I did.

I have joined freecycle and not only cleared out the junk from my garage but gained a pentax camera, 2 lenses, filters, film and case, 3 knitting books, science books for my daughter (so good that I'm wrapping them up for her birthday), nearly 40 videos in mint condition too all FREE!!! My favourite price! Check it out its a yahoo group wish it had been there when I moved into my house...

I got a 3 piece conservatory suite and the lovely woman who offered it, even drove the large sofa to our house in her car as it wouldn't fit in ours :o

Just what I wanted and free :D

I've got some stuff in my shed I need to get rid of, but dont like the idea of advertising to sell, but the only thing is I dont have transport, are all freecyclers as accomidating as this Phillipa??? I have a treadmill in my shed (doesnt get used now I have the dogs to take me out on real walks :rotfl: )which would be impossible to move if anyone wanted it but they didnt have transport. I've heard of freecyle but never really looked into it, would I be able to state that anyone that wanted the stuff have to provide there own transport?
