    Hi,

I ordered one of these yesterday, I still think it will work with my machines, as I didn't realise the cable only. I have AOL ADSL modem on my desktop, and I was gonna plug this router into that and then run my new laptop off of the router, this will work won't it?, as my dell pc has an ethernet slot and card.

It is not that simple, you need to run ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) on your desktop machine and your desktop needs to be running whenever you want to access the Internet. Kinda defeat the purpose of buying a router really. I'll suggest to cancel your order or if possible return it.

I thought the router plugs into the asdl modem and transmits data through the aerial to be wireless, but like i said i am a novice to this, does anyone know exactly if this will work or not without having to have my desktop??

As i am aware a router ovecomes the problems with using ics and no you dont need ics if you got a router. i think you may be mixing a router up with a switch/hub which does require ics if you havent got a router as roger is using.

This router should be ok if you got a cable or adsl modem with ethernet connection.

As for not using a router for gaming yet still be able to go wireless, not sure if this would work but worth trying is to get both modem and router connected to pc seprately (so can play online games without router) and have the laptop
wireless connected to the router using ics. If this is what you were on about wiraone my apologies

But the problem is, rjtyrell is on AOL ADSL modem which I take is as the blue USB modem instead of an ethernet modem. The Belkin as the one sold by Amazon requires ADSL modem with ethernet port or cable modem. For rjtyrell to be able to use this router, he needs to have the USB modem connected to his desktop, run ICS and makes the router as a wireless access point. What he needs really is a Wireless ADSL Modem router... Misco has 3COM bundled Wireless ADSL Modem/Router for £49.98 (Misco No.: 104436) or Argos has bundled Linksys WAG354G/USB54g adaptor for the same price (in store only I guess).

Hopefully the above clear up any confusion .. DSL/Cable router will only work with Cable Modem (NTL/Telewest/AOL on NTL) or ADSL modem with ethernet port (eg: DLink DSL 300T or ADSLNation X-Modem).

Please be aware that AOL only officially supports the use of a few wireless modem routers (see here).

However I am pretty sure you can use most other routers.

  • Any router will work with AOL Broadband.

You just have to set the MTU to 1400 due to their rather strange network.

The problem with this particular model (especially the newer one) is, it has less flash memory. You need to have at least 4MB to be able to load the 3rd party firmware.

My guess is that the one on Amazon is the latest v5000 which doesn't run on Linux at all.
