  • IS IT CABLE ONLY? And therefore only useful for NTL customers

It looks like it is cable only. Therefore, the average person with BT or Wanadoo etc would not be able to use this.

There is no mention of a built in DSL modem and no Telephone interface listed in the tech specs.
  • Routers described as "Cable/DSL" or "Broadband" Routers do not have a modem as is the case for this model. They can be used with ADSL by adding an ADSL modem such as the X-Modem but that does then make it more expensive than an all-in-one modem/router.

An all-in-one router with an ADSL modem built-in is described as an "ADSL Router"

Personally I have the separate (X-Modem) modem and (Airport Extreme) wireless router so that I can easily move between cable and ADSL without having to dump the whole lot. I also have the separates so I can extend my wireless network with a second (Airport Express) wireless base station. None of the all-in-one boxes seem to support WDS.

    What's WDS?

I have an NTL cable modem and a wired network, meaning that my daughter can have broadband in her bedroom and I have broadband in the loft. However I was thinking of buying a laptop and playing my email games in the lounge, then emailing them on to the next player. Presumably I could use this wireless router and a suitable PC card in the laptop, and have a network which is partially wired and partially wireless?

Yes you can - I also have this router with NTL and works a treat with my PC connected via Ethernet cable to one of the four ethernet ports on the wireless router and a laptop connected via the wireless connection. A very nice and compact unit which works well.

One question though how is the two network connections (i.e. yours and your daughters) managed at present? - I assume you already have some form of switch/router. The Belkin device can also replace this.

The 3com office connect supports wds.

    Hi,

I ordered one of these yesterday, I still think it will work with my machines, as I didn't realise the cable only. I have AOL ADSL modem on my desktop, and I was gonna plug this router into that and then run my new laptop off of the router, this will work won't it?, as my dell pc has an ethernet slot and card.

Yes I have a Belkin 5-port network switch, which means that my PC (as the network server) needs to be switched on for my daughter to have internet access. The reason for choosing this slightly cumbersome arrangement was because I play a lot of live internet games, and one of the main causes of not being able to host/see/join games is when people are behind a router
