lil miss - I love how doc's don't beleive you  I still at 36wks get questioned whenever I see a 'new' medical person because I'm allergic to penicillin - oh yes I just thought I'd make it up for a bit of a laugh! :p

If you have the antibodies lil miss then you won't need to worry. If you don't, and they give them to you via injection, I'm sure the doctor would sign you off work until the epidemic at school is over, as the protection they give is time limited not blanket. Its certainly worth discussing with him or her anyway.

You can self-certify for up to five days, so if you are concerned then why not stay off until you get the results back, or ask the head if you can be on non-contact duties until you know what the outcome of your blood tests are?

Nicki - I think you have to be here to see what I mean. Hundreds of hubbies returned from a 6 month tour around the same time and there are now hundreds of pregnant ladies around who are all under the same med centre. It would be a sight to see them all running to the med centre for these tests during an outbreak (all our children go to the same 2 schools) no matter how simple they are. Nothing is simple in the Army.

Fingers crossed for you Lil miss.

Sami - I am going to sound like I am contradicting everything you say today. I'm not, I promise. But, when I registered for the first time with the Army med centre here I said I have always been told I am allergic to penicillin and I was told that quite often people think they are because they had some sort of reaction as a child but in fact they aren't. I was told to book in to be tested to find out for sure as the penicillin I am apparently allergic to is quite common and better than the alternatives.

Never managed to get that checked out though so still none the wiser :rotfl:

and the thing is how many kids will be carrying it but wont come out with the rash till next week now,,,no point me worrying to much( easier said than done eh),,my head will prob say im over reacting anyway.

My DS2 is allergic to penicillin. He was fine until he got pneumonia and was given a massive does by IV, he came out in a full body rash, his temperature sky rocketed again and he was seriously ill. The problem now is that he could have a regular dosage of it and be fine or he could have a very serious reaction to it.

He also had a minor reaction to Eurithromicin last year, which works in the same way as penicillin, so it would suggest that he would have a more serious reaction to penicillin.

It's one of those things Doctors argue over all the time. Nobody can actually agree as to why penicillin can cause problems for some people let alone who is classed as 'allergic'.

I'm clearly missing something obvious then, and a medical centre couldn't cope with doing 100 or even 200 blood tests over the course of a few days to prevent a large number of babies being put at risk. Presumably none of these babies will be offered any of their routine vacs either just because they are all going to fall due at the same time, and these will take considerably longer to administer than a simple blood test.

I don't mean to doubt what you say, and hope you are just trying to make a humorous point rather than being serious, but I do find it extremely difficult to believe that even the army would deny women a 5 minute procedure to protect their unborn child if it was medically indicated and cheap as these things go, just because there might be a large number of women at risk. Do they also refuse to give vaccinations to whole platoons being sent to foreign countries too for the same reason?
