Which broadband?

Hi.

I'm looking at getting a broadband and telephone package shortly but find all the information confusing as I have never used broadband before and get lost in the technical details.

I'm considering Talk Talk or 02 and have tried looking on the Samknows website but don't really understand it fully.

It would be for a computer and laptop, so I assume it needs to be wireless.
My phone line is with BT.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Ive been with talktalk since they first offered broadband. Its only recently my exchange was unbundled and now I get totally free broadband which is great. My phone is International 3 and I get all land line calls free 24/7 anywhere in the Uk plus several overseas countries. I think its about £11 a month. On top of that is the line rental of about the same amount.

    Ive found them very good.

Go to the talktalk website and enter your postcode to check you get free broadband.

You don't have to have wireless if you don't want to - if you always use either from a fixed location in your house, then wired is perfectly fine . . .

Talktalk get a bad press but I've been very happy with them - my phone and broadband bill is never more than about £23!

I think talktalk got bad press a few years back when they first introduced their ground breaking - free broadband. They were totally overwhelmed by the hundreds of thousands trying to sign up for it. I guess it was inevitable there would be hitches.

I signed up the first week they had it, even though I couldnt get free broadband at that time - as the phone package was still brilliant. I have the free broadband now and I can honestly say Ive had no problems with talktalk. I once rang them about my OE not receiving/sending messages. I had a call back from a supervisor apologising and telling me a major server was down. I later got 6 months free broadband for the inconvenience :)

Yeah, talktalk are still having load issues, they are still getting a ridiculous amount of new sign ups, I have heard that suppliers are cuttings down on new sign ups due to the financial downturn though.

O2 (or Be* as it actually is provided by them) is excellent IF you're in an LLU area. Samkonws will tell you that. If not, stay well clear as their Home Access package is a joke. Post a link to your samknows page and I'll tell you what's good and what's not if you like?

What will you be using your connection for? If you're used to dial-up and just want it for general smufing and e-mail you might do well to look at Pipex or someone like that. DON'T sign up with Tiscali. They're currently in administration and finding it very hard to find a buyer. No-one knows what's happening with them as yet. I'm on a few PC forums and there's a slight sense of worry among those who're currently signed up with Tiscali.

Since when are they in administration?? - they're just finding it difficult to sell themselves, and yes they do have a lot of debt, but not in administration.....

    Tiscali actually own Pipex now!

I have to say I have been with AOL for over 5 years now and although they might not be the cheapest I have only ever once had an ISP outage and that was for only 4 hours! I get 8mbs free wireless router and unlimited downloads (the usual un disclosed level of the fair usage applies!) £14.99
