I feel it is unjust that homebuyers have to pay the full stamp duty rate according to the whole property value. I'd like the system revised to match income tax approach so that the next tax band only applies to the amount of money over and above the band below.
Whoops, sorry - think this could be thought as repetition as have just read Martin's blog from Dec 06 where he mentions this exact issue!
Mind you, there's been no change since then Martin - so come on Government, play fair with the Stamp Duty thing !0 -
Bank statements & cashpoint receipts state 'available to spend' but do not give the true amount in your account. They include your available overdraft amount added to your balance.
Eg. - If you have a £500 overdraft allowance, and £10 in your current account, they show 'available to spend £510'0 -
Carers Allowance is £53.10 weekly and has exclusions so many Carers are unable to claim. Pay all Carers the minimum wage hourly rate. Carers save Government millions and work all hours for no reward.0
-
Carers Allowance is £53.10 weekly, if you earn £92 or more you cannot claim. Many Carers have reduced income having reduced work hours because of Caring responsibilities. Abolish the earnings rule for Carers.0

I should like to see the inclusion of uncleared balances on bank statements banned. Even if the cleared balance is shown elsewhere it is too easy to overlook the fact that what is shown on one's account isn't all available to spend.0

@ MSE Martin ...
Are we missing a trick, maybe a very important one?
Namely, we have varying degrees to which Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland have devolved administrations and varying degrees of devolved legislative powers - Westminster does not have overall control over some of the suggestions made in this thread. There is for instance a Petitions Committee in the Scottish Parliament which can itself instigate legislation.
My Suggestion: The list you eventually compile should not be sent just to MP's, but to representatives of each Parliament or Assembly. If many little people, in many little places, do many little things,
they can change the face of the world.

ISA Transfers to be electronic and immediate
Banks should stop using cheques for ISA transfers and taking over a month to process such a simple transaction.0 -
Increase length of half term holidays.
Going away in half terms are very expensive and you are limited to a week or midweek as you cannot miss school. Half terms should begin on the Friday the week before and end on the Monday the week after to allow both weekends for people to take their kids away.

Stop charging a second Council tax on properties that are family homes but that have an extension or annexe.
We have an annexe but cannot use it without paying a 2nd council tax charge, even though a covenant in the planning states its for family use only, no renting or letting allowed.
MP'S do not have to pay for their second properties why are we expected to pay twice for 1 property?0 -
There are lots of unemployment, especially at the moment, why not make the first 3 months job seekers allowance 'free', but if you keep coming back for it have government based centres were you work for your welfare, get skills and cover your costs.0
