After reading everyone's breadmaking successes I thought I might get a breadmaker and give it a go. I noticed that Argos has one for £24.99 and I was wondering if anyone has tried the cookworks model? I thought I'd start with a cheaper one as I'm reticent to spend a fortune as I don't know how successful I'll be and whether I'd use it a lot. I just want to be able to make a basic loaf of bread and that's it really. I've looked on previous threads and noticed that one person has given it the thumbs up, has anyone else used it and can lend their opinion on its merits?
Thanks.

I bought a cookworks one about 4/5 years ago.
It lasted two attempts and then the element died on me. Can't remember for the life of me what the bread was like.
But the best one to get is a panasonic one. But that is very pricey at £60ish.
Breadmakers are one thing that you get what you pay for.
Get a cheap and nasty one and you will get not very nice bread. More like a brick.

I also have a cookworks one (my first one) and whilst I did make a few loaves in it, they were like bricks compared to the bread I now get out of my Russell Hobbs Breadman Ultimate (comparable to the panny most others have got)
Unless you have the time, like squeaky - to leave your bread ro rise for longer and keep checking it and then set it to bake, then you may be as well off going for a decent machine from the outset.
There are others on here (MATH for example) who have old, cheapy models and swear by them, but as an owner of both a cheapy and a decent model - I know which one gets used most0 -
I have never used the cookworks one but as TM as pointed out I'm an 'old cheapie' LOL My Mellerware makes perfect loaves everytime, jam and butter. If you are unsure whether you will use one regularly I would try a cheapie first or even better borrow one from a firend for a coupe of weeks. I did this with a juicer and decided it wasn't for me and saved myself over £50 by avoiding an espensive mistake. The Panasonics etc are real good quality and good value if you are sure you will use it regularly for many years but a very expensive mistake it it lives in the cupboard 50 weeks of the year.Life's a beach! We have a Cookworks one. The bread is good but the loaf is too small for a family of 5. Also the non-stick lining is starting to peel. We've probably made about 200 loaves with the Cookworks. The cost of the loaf works out about the same as an uncut loaf from Sainsburys.0

I have a Hinari 1.5/2.0/2.5 LB size breadmaker I got for half price at tesco in the January sales, was only 24.99 and makes a good loaf. Unfortunately it's no longer available at 24.99, but amazon have it for 31.50 here http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000ASB20Y/qid=1142289840/sr=1-4/ref=sr_1_11_4/203-4121866-8958367 (dont know how to do short links sorry).

Thanks everyone for all your suggestions, I'll look into the various models which have been suggested, I think I'll pass on the cookworks one for now. Thanks for the generous offer Ticklemouse but unfortunately I'm in Wales (I should rephrase that before I get missiles thrown at me!!!)
Decisions, decisions.

I bought the cheapo £14.99 Bread Maker from Argos about an hour ago!
I've followed "destructions" and the dough has been mixing for 5 minutes (3 hour setting)
I'm doing the basic white bread mix, BUT didn't have any vegatable oil and ASDA didn't have any of the small bottle in stock (partner works in an edible oil factory so we get it for free anyway) I've used sunflower oil instead - will this make a difference?
I'll let you all know the verdict (I may even put up a picture if it's not too embarrassing:rotfl: )
wish my bread luck:o

It should be fine. I only use either olive oil or butter in my bread.:smileyhea0
