Just a thought? With VAT going up tomorrow night does anyone think all the instore prices will increase up overnight? If they will then they are going to need to change all the shelf labels unless they display some sort of disclaimer surely?

Could this be a opportunity to get some money back?

Doesnt actually go up until Tuesday (http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/vat/forms-rates/rates/rate-rise-guidance.pdf)

I am guessing shops will have signs up advising that some prices may increase at the checkouts due to the VAT rise (bearing in mind we are only talking pence - ie if something was £1.18 before, it will be £1.20 after)

  • Went to tesco today as daughter was after a new mobile. Found one she liked , it was on offer for £69.97 if you spent an additional £40 or more in store. Got to checkout and bill came to £169.78 with phone. Checked receipt and had been charged £89.97 for phone......no £20 discount. Went to CS and was given £20 refund. Duely questioned this pointing out blue sign behind CS desk. Asked for manager. Snotty woman came and told me that it was an operators error, they had not activated discount and I was only entitled to £20 refund as technically I had not been overcharged for the phone. Is this right? To me if the discount was not applied at the till...then have I not been overcharged?

Tesco staff never learn - they just go on dishing out the same old 'dung' ! There is no room for interpretation on this - they took more money off you than they should have done. Thats a good definition of an 'overcharge' - unless the CA would like to admit to stealing the money. You should have got double the difference and I would certainly be taking this up with head office.

i had a little overcharge on some photopaper a while back, and they tried to give me a refund of the amount. when i pointed out that it was dtd, they tried to fob me off with "because you went to self serve they couldn't dtd !" i then asked them to show me where it stated this on their promise on board, and they went and asked manager and got an r and r instead!!!!! much better! this was in staines middx store. i guess it depends on which store you go in. was only about £3.50 but better in my pocket then mr T's XX

I got the "you used a self service till" excuse in Tesco in Hull, so complained to Head Office and was promptly sent out a cashcard. It's always worth calling, or emailing CS, as they're much more helpful than some of the stores.
