Maybe it depends on what you are buying then, we have to watch what we buy because of DS condition and so we are limited to bying many thingswith additives and the like in. That being said I have stocked up on bangers for the freezer and cheese a decent shelf life) from Sainsburys.

We do not really eat a great deal of basics stuff, just mild cheese, fruit but I think that is like for like, and custard creams. As I say though, it depends from week to week - month on month as to what is cheaper and whether it is something you use or not. We have to be careful what we eat so we do not have the luxury of being able to choose stuff just because it is cheap. Cheerios or Frosties might be cheap for example but they are 21% sugar so I would not buy these just because they are cheap. The same goes fo toiletries, laundry products and even toilet rolls (!!) we can ony use certain ones so we cannot buy things just because they are on offer otherwise the kids eczema flares up.

I amsure I could save an absolute bomb by living on Basics ranges but the kids health has to come first.

PS. After watching 'the worst food in Britain' I'll never touch a value or cheap sausage again in my life!! They could be 1p a pack and they would still stay on the shelf!! I don't expect my food to be 'free range' or 'organic' but some of the stuff the stick in value sausages is criminal!

ETA: I did check the link above for Sainsburys but we do not buy any fizzy drinks, sweets, crisps or biscuits (1 pack of custard creams a week does us), spicy foods or pastries and that is pretty much everything on that list, so while comprimising is fine for others it is not for us so we have to make do but I do not think the prices have risen on the things we usually use tbh and our food bill is more or less the same.

    Not sure I agree.

I've been using Tesco for weekly shops for longer than I care to remember - but in recent months I've noticed prices going up significantly.

When Sainsbury started their half price promotion - the thread is here - I took the plunge and did a week's shop based primarily around the half price deals and buying other stuff from the basics range.

I can tell you several things:

First - my shopping bill is cheaper at Sainsbury.
Second - generally the quality of Sainsbury food is far superior to that of Tesco.
Finally - the Basic range is a lot, I mean a lot, superior to the Value range.

    Hey ho,

^^^^ What he said, and I don't spend our money on crisps, fizzy, pastries etc etc, blue_monkey, and Sainsburys is much better - better quality for the money, generally cheaper on most of what we buy and for those products of a similar price, the quality justifies going to Sainsburys.

Actually, just thought more on this, theS I go to is quite small and so limited to what it sells (I can't even get kids toilet wipes there) where as Tesco is huge. There is another S I have been to that is massive but it is too far away to go back and forth to but maybe this is why, for me, shopping at Sainsbury is expensive around here. Next time Igo I'll take more note of what I am buying and what is available (they only sell about 3 Muller Corners for example but at Tesco they do around 15 different ones), I only use it for my 'top up'.

I have to admit that if T's had 1000 points for £75 spend I'd do a £75 spend each week!! At the moment I do a big monthly shop and then top up, when they had the points codes around I would spread the orders out. I think that CC points are the key to getting their customers back.

Well actually our closest Sainsburys is absolutely disgusting and more expensive then Tesco's. They never have any proper vegetable or fruit.
Sometimes I pop in and just go and buy whatever is on offer, but I wouldn't go there to do normal shop.
But I have been to other Sainsburys and they are nicer, however too far for me to do regular shopping.

I thought this thread was about Tesco Clubcard Deal not a Sainsbury-v-Tesco debate!!!!
  • I always check out Paid to Shop http://www.paidtoshop.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=44 on the best way to maximise your Tesco clubcard vouchers.

Next to MSE (who have saved me money), Paid to Shop has shown me how to maximise my points and in my first quater, after reading their data I recevied over £130 worth of vouchers. That is £520 worth of deals. I have bought Merlin passes (Thanks to a poster on MSE) and we are now having lots of free days out. Went to the Sealife Centre yesterday and it was great not paying over £50, but just flashing the pass for free.

I also use money off coupons. The Good Food Show was great for these and even got my mate hooked on swiping the vouchers off the counter(s).

i hope they dont stop the points system cos as a cub leader we rely on these..i give spare cards/key fobs to various other leaders/parents who only use tesco occasionally and we use the vouchers to buy supplies with ie fruit juices, biscuits and stationary. Without these we would have to pay these out of funds or even a price increase for meetings
im tray not davey...pinched my hubbys account!!!

I must stop buying smellies..well until i spot a bargain!
never turn a bargain /freebie down you just never know when you need it :D

I concur 100%. Actually, 110%. Sainsburys Basics range is generally of much better quality than Tesco's Value range (and Asda smartprice and Morrisons value range to boot). And far wider reaching, meaning a lower shopping bill. Mysupermarket will verify this (up to a couple of months ago we would have laughed at people who said Sainsburys was the cheapest supermarket). And the theory about 'unhealthy eating' is frankly nonsense. If you check out the ingredients in the Basics range it tends to have less fat/sugar/salt than the brand names. We buy lots of Basics products that we use to make up properly prepared, nutritious and cooked meals, none of the ready meals etc. I also love the traffic light labelling system on all the Basics products.

Coupon Mad how do you find about the coupons in the newspapers like the one in the Times? Did you then use all those coupons at one time on your shopping in Tescos?

    Thanks

I check the Daily Newspaper thread on MSE each day. That's what the newspaper thread is for (not for discussing the day's news ;):D). It's almost always started in the early hours by quoia and tends to stay on page one or two of the Vouchers board.

And every other day I check the magazine offers thread to see if any magazines have a good coupon in them (sometimes worth a lot more than the cost of the magazine). There are 2 magazine threads, be careful - you want the magazine thread that is started by MBN where she has listed all the current magazine offers and coupons in the first post (and there's current chat and updates in the last posts).

Both threads are on the Discount Codes & Vouchers board. The newspaper thread changes each day so it's a bit pointless if I link it. You'd be better just to look on the vouchers board for it each day or just search the forums for 'newspaper', maybe mid-morning, and most coupons and offers will have been reported by then.

If there's a good NSS (non-store specific) coupon I buy as many copies of the paper/mag as I can use the coupons for in Tesco. So if the moc is valid for a week I might buy 10 copies of the paper (using coupons to buy them, so it costs me nothing). I tend to visit a Tesco once per day, sometimes 2 different Tesco stores, and you can use one of each coupon you have, per store per day). I have a lot of different coupons!
