Car Scrappage Scheme

just to let you know that £7000 (or just shy of) is the 2009 (pre standard ESP) price for a 1.4 i20 comfort in Red (Red is standard colour and I presume you mean 5 door as well). You can check with the PDF downloadable from the hyundai website - £7250 is what you would have paid if you ordered the i20 1.4 in red with ESP as an optional extra.
Either way they will be extremely happy - I have had the i20 for over a week (1.2 comfort) and it is a fantastic car. Is worth giving the car a good clean and wax though - make sure you 'clay' the car prior to waxing - this will remove all of the dirt that is ingrained in the paint (I was amazed at what came out). Make sure you use a decent wax as well - Collinite 476s is easy to apply and hardwearing (use it to coat the alloys as well).0 -
I have had a look through the forum but couldnt see this so will ask (sorry if I have missed it somewhere):
I meet all the requirements for the scrappage, my MOT is vaild until July 14th 2009, but:
My car today failed its MOT, the garage said it would be fine to drive around while I decided what to do.
I checked with VOSA and the failed MOT they said does NOT over ride the orginal MOT, they said I still have a valid MOT until July 14th.
However, will I have any issues because of the failed MOT if I try to do the scrappage deal say on the weekend?
I can't find anything about this anywhere and all the gargaes and help lines are now shut as it is after 6pm. Many thanks if anyone knows?0 -
You have up to 14 days after the MOT runs out to order the new car. The MOT, tax and insurance must all be valid AT THE TIME OF ORDER. Im sure you wont have a problem. Obviously your new car is unlikely to be available for weeks.
If you check further up you will see some of the main faqs0 -
Many thanks for the reply - it is much appreciated!
The only issue was the fact it has failed an MOT test which is on the VOSA database. VOSA say I have a vaild MOT until the old one expires but I know how garages and the government like to squirm out of things on technicalities. So it was just the fact that it has failed and will be registered that way on VOSA on the latest certificate.
As a lot of scrappage cars are likely to be old cars that need work I would assume others have been in my situation, i.e. gone for the MOT, failed, decided to go for scrapage, but still have some time left on the pre failure MOT.0 -

I think you get 2 weeks grace from the expiry date of the MOT, the same as the tax, but you won't be insured if you have an expired MOT,
But every dealer is different so you might need to ask,
So long as the scrap car has a valid MOT road tax or SORN, and registered to you for more than 1 year, you should be alright, as long as you order the new car while your old car is still roadworthy, then run your old car until the last day of it's MOT and drive it to the dealers for scrappage while it is still insured, I have the problem of still being a gap of 4 weeks where I won't have a car at all while waiting for my new car, so be quick,
Most dealers are quoting around 10 to 12 weeks for factory order/delivery though, and prices are going up all the time, don't expect the dealer to give you any freebies, make sure you check the price you are quoted by the dealer won't go up in the 3 months it will take to arrive, like Citroen,
I had to fight tooth and nail to get a free set of mats, a glovebox lid RRP of £66.99,
and £25 of petrol for my base model Toyota Aygo today,

You still have a valid MOT until the 14th of July the failure doesn't count.0 -
Thanks for the reply - as I say I have no issue on anything else with regards to qualification apart from:
~ The car failed its MOT but still has time left on the old MOT.
Does the fact it has been failed, even though the old one is still valid exclude it from scrapage? A lot of people MOT before the expiry date so I would have thought someone would have experienced a failure and decided that rather than fix it they would go for scrapage. Has anyone doing this had success?
Edit: Sorry was writting my reply to your first post when you wrote your 2nd, would be interested to hear from someone who has done the scrapage.
I should also say that although the garage said it was okay to drive, it did fail on 3 dangerous things, main one being one of the back breaks not working (they said it would be okay for local driving, just don't go above 30mph - would the fact it failed with dangerous failures affect the whole scrapage as well?)0 -
Well the Hyundai prices haven't increased that much. i10's are the same (not sure about the top models). My i20 has gone up £150, so not a big increase, but I'm glad I ordered when I did.
As for waxing, I'm doing mine with diamond brite. Did it on my other car at the weekend to test it out & the results were amazing, my 7 year old car has a much better shine than my new hyundai. Took a good 4-5 hours though. Have to be careful of the stuff you buy as there are claims that there is fake stuff around, not sure how true that is though.Next year we'll be millionaires!0 -
amf, stop worrying - go and look at the cars, take your docs with you and Im sure you will be ordering a car no problems
No one is going to be driving the car, so it doesnt matter what it failed on. You still have the valid MOT, the garage has told you its ok to drive it - its fine. Enjoy choosing your new car. Hope you understand though that when your MOT is due again, assume you wont be doing the work to get it through, if your tax runs out or you want to reclaim whats left, you will need to SORN the car until you get your new one.
Does the tax disc (VED) have to be valid when the order for the new vehicle is placed?
The vehicle tax requirement, like the MOT requirement relates to the date you order your new vehicle, not the date of delivery. Your old car is still eligible for the scheme if it has a current MOT, or the MOT for your old car has expired within 14 days of the order. Similarly, it must have a valid tax disc or one that has expired within 14 days of the order.
If you are retaining your old vehicle, you must SORN your vehicle, or buy a new tax disc within 14 days of the tax disc running out or you will be committing an offence. Also, if you have neither a MOT or road tax you cannot legally use or park the vehicle on the public road and you will need to make arrangements with the dealer for the vehicle to be collected.0 -
I'm taking a VW Golf 1.6 S for a road test this weekend. The on the road price for that car is £15,080. What I really want is the same car but with a 1400 TSI engine but they are very popular and there won't be any more coming into the UK until March 2010. Bearing in mind that a second hand 1.6 that is less than a year old is selling selling for around £14,500 at the moment what do you think I might be offered for the 1.6 in around 7 months time if I took it back to my dealer as part exchange for the more popular engine?0
