Car Scrappage Scheme

Any news on the talks between the government and the manufacturers ?:huh:
Can't find anything on the news channels, they all seem to be hung up on the MPs expenses story.0 -
I had an email from one of the web based car sales sites. Id enquired about a Golf. They reply that the scrappage applies only to UK registered cars and that they will have none to deliver for another 16 weeks and therefore "this will be beyond the Scheme timescale"
Erm??? What are they on about. The scheme is until March 2010.
News:
Motoring groups said the government's long-awaited scrappage scheme had turned into a "dog's dinner" after two leading carmakers pulled out of today's shambolic launch.Ford and Honda said they were still waiting for clarification from the government over how much they would have to contribute to the scheme, which was designed to kickstart moribund sales and revive the flagging industry.0 -
Hi,
I ordered an i20 from a dealer a couple of weeks ago. He told me that it arrived in the show room the following week.
At the time of the deal he told me that I would be able to collect it on the 18th and he took a £500 deposit.
Now all I am being told is that they are waiting to find out the next step of the scheme and what they have to do. I have posted them my MOT and registration document (they are 30 minutes away so it was easiest to post).
Are they stalling me for some reason or is it true that they don't know what to do next?
Has anyone who has ordered a Hyundai under the scheme had their car yet?
Thanks.0 -

It seems as usual, that the Government Agency dealing with it have made a !!!! up, it is being sorted apparently.:rolleyes:0 -
What's the point in putting up with something you're not really sure you want, and are only tempted to buy because there's a £2k incentive? The manufacturers were desperate for people to buy before the scheme and were offering discounts like this anyway so you're not really saving anything, and now there's no leeway for haggling as people will be queuing up for the panda. Plus if you buy on finance, the finance will probably add at least £1k to the total cost anyway.
What do you consider a "fortune" on the banger? A couple hundred quid a year is nothing compared with the cost of depreciation of a new car (and what you'd be paying in monthly payments if on finance). If you got the Panda you would also have to keep the car serviced to have any hope of retaining the warranty.
Don't worry about the ncap rating, it's probably still much safer than your current car.
If you want something else you'd probably be best buying something second hand that meets your needs that you like, and can afford outright without finance. At the end of the day the road tax is a relatively small cost in the scheme of things.0 -
Indeed, the Fiat Panda ECO was available new for £5300 on the road at some dealers before this scheme started, so they have hiked up prices to squeeze more profit out of each sale.0

anewman, good point about people getting sucked into buying new when they are better off financially with their old banger or a newer used car.
Here's my back of an envelope rationale.
Old car road tax £212 new car £35
Old car insurance £400 new car £300
Old car fuel £900 new car £600
Old car MOT £200 new car £0
Old car servicing £100 new car £130
Total £747 per year EXTRA for the old car,or £62.25 per month. So I can have a new small car for £35 a month
it's a no brainer.0 -

And your figures for depreciation on the new car are ???0 -

Who cares ?
I don't mean to sound flippant but even if the depreciation is the whole £35 a month you are stumping up then it's still worth it for worry free (relatively) motoring.0
