I'm so very sorry for your terrible loss. It must have been such a terrible experience for you and I can understand exactly how you're feeling. Console yourself with the fact it was a quick and painless death for your old friend. It's so much worse for you because you weren't expecting it but he didn't have a horrible long lingering illness. I've lost 3 very much loved dogs over the years and it never gets any easier. When I lost my first beautiful girl, I thought I was going to have a breakdown because I was so grief ridden. Don't worry about getting a grip. Let out your grief and cry your heart out. Your dog was much loved and a very big part of your life. You have no need to feel guilty over your natural feelings. Everyone copes in different ways and I've got pictures of my beloved dogs everywhere and it gives me so much pleasure to see how happy they were. They'd all been rescue dogs and the love they gave us was priceless and it was very much returned. My little chap is 10years old and I dread the thought of losing him but I know he's had a good and happy life with me and what more can we do for our friends. When you're ready, really would suggest getting another dog. It's a tribute to your boy. Take good care.xx

It's been nearly 3 weeks now and it is starting to get easier, although I found a hair last night which set me off all over again!! I just wanted to say a big thankyou to everyone on here and especially Emma for helping me along in my grief. It's nice to know there are plenty of others who share in being 'weird animal lovers'! Those who don't will never experience the pure joy and unconditional love.

I'm desperate to get another dog as the house feels it's missing something, but I live on my own overseas. Rosie was perfect for me in her old age and travelled everywhere with me, I somehow can't see a new dog being as understanding! I will have another once I'm settled back in the UK, probably more as it breaks my heart to think of them sitting unloved in rescue homes.

Singlehouseholder I hope you're feeling a little better now and going back to work wasn't too traumatic.

Glad your feeling better. I've just read your thread, with tears in my eyes!

I lost my old boy two years ago now and I still miss him every day. I forget he's gone sometimes and still habitually look for him at bedtime to put him to bed, or I look for him when I come in.I couldn't have got another dog at the time. I've needed this time to get over it, not that you ever do really, but it's easier to live with as time goes by.

We've recently acquired a new pup, Pippa. Little rescue Jack Russell. Wonderful having another dog around, she's so much fun. Whilst she doesn't replace my old dog, I'm glad that I decided to have another one, I hope that you are able to have another dog eventually.
