Dogs dont go out on there own they are usually on a leash ...cats wander on there own it would be dificult for a cat owner to keep up with there cat & there poo is tiny in comparison lol
They are a totally diff animal cats can be put on a leash but that would make them dogs and they are cats lol

Why is it that dog owners have legal responsibility now for scooping up their dog-poo and placing in a suitable receptacle - whereas this doesn't apply to cat owners? Surely there is no difference between keeping dogs or cats as pets.

Because a cat is not a dog.
They have different status in law.

There are no laws regarding cats and fouling. A cat holds a unique position in law in that the owner of the cat is not held to be responsible for the consequences of any trespass by the cat. It is an offence to put down poison or set snares for a cat.

Also the reason for dog owners to be responsable for there dogs poo is that a dog may poo anywhere ie public paths etc but a cat will almost always try and bury there waste they are very clean animals
I always wear gloves when gardening anyway as ther may be other things in the earth .

I am a pet owner and own 4 cats. It may be wise to keep your cat in whilst you are out. Put a bell on his collar so it scares the birds when he tries for when he does go out. Sadly, it is nature and it's in biult for their survival...just like it is for us to eat meat. It isnt nice.

why should the OP keep the cat indoors whilst at work, they need exercise dont they, cats are cats and they can kill birds, OP id use some of the ideas posted eg the bell collar

That's a difficult one. My dad's a git when it comes to cats and put spikes in between the plants so when they jump off the fence they'll get impaled. He's also told the neighbours that he'll kill them if he catches them. It's weird. I think it's because they crap in other people's gardens, dig up plants and kill birds. But that's nature. I get my dogs to chase them off my property (I feed birds). I don't really know what to suggest - you'll just have to hope that they don't have a air rifle.

Previous posters have already described your father pretty well so i won't so i don't get banned.

you get your dogs to chase cats off because you feed birds?? Where's the connection?
I have 2 cats but also have 2 bird feeders. One feeder is completely inaccessible for a cat - the other is up a tree and birds can easily escape.

I can also state that my cats very rarely enter other people's gardens because there are several cats in the area and as a result, all the cats have a smaller territory. I chase other cats from my garden using a water pistol or by suddenly scraping my foot on the ground as i walk and the noise scares them off. I'd never hit another cat and i'd be furious if anyone every struck either of my two.

  • We feed the birds and I don't like cats. The only times that I have seen birds killed in my garden was by sparrowhawk(s). I blame the feeding of the birds as without this the sparrowhawk wouldn't see my garden as a restaurant.

The bigger problem with cats is the digging up of flower beds. Lemon peel, tea bags soaked in vinegar or pepper all help bur throwing the poo into a cat-owners garden gives more satisfaction. Dogs eat cats - it's nature.

Therein lies the problem. Perhaps the law should be changed
