  • Well in that case tell your Card Services Dept that they should refund all those customers who paid a deposit at Courts with a Halifax debit card - instead of telling them that they are not covered!

nb if you don't believe me get one of your mystery shop agents to ring them up for you!

  • and to repeat - its not Halifax's Ts & Cs which cover this but the Visa agreement.

If you choose not to accept my word then that's ok, this is a message board and I could be anyone.

This guy (or woman) is talking !!!!!!!
As Martin mentions above in his post there is no Section 75 cover under the CCA for DEBIT cards.
His/her statement that it is not Halifax t&c but Visa agreement is totally bogus as Visa as a commercial company cannot overrule any country's laws such as Consumer credit act here.

According to Working Lunch, Visa provide protection for consumers using their debit cards:
    Visa debit cards

But any debit card that operates within the VISA scheme also carries cover. Visa says it has strong rules in place to protect cardholders, and you should contact the card issuer.

  • Did you buy anything from Courts using a debit card?
I have asked the HBOS spokesperson to substantiate where in Halifax t&c does it state that this cover exists- and they have gone very quiet!
Are you trying to say that Visa ( the company) are going to step in if Halifax Visa refuses to refund - I think not.I think this is a cheap marketing plot by Halifax.
Say what you will but I will continue to buy anything over £100 on a CREDIT card knowing that I will be covered by section 75 of CCA. (That is of course until those b******s in Brussels screw it all up for the benefit of the French and Germans)

I think we should be satisfied by the reply from HBOS_Press_Officer for now. As johnllew has pointed out, it is the 'VISA' logo which confers the benefits of Section 75 protection/liability on a particular purchase as the the payments/clearing system used is common between VISA credit and debit cards. When you make a purchase on your VISA debit card it initially passes through the VISA settlement system, and only indirectly leaves your account, because VISA claims a payment for it I imagine.

As long as Halifax is express about the range of 'merchants' excluded from the cashback reward scheme [and you can always contact them to ask about a particular organisation before making payment through the Moneyback account] then we - or anyone else - can opt to use this account for precisely those transactions which suit our needs. Credit cards are plainly a group of organisations that would be excluded.

Can I ask HBOS_Press_Officer whether to qualify for cashback a particular transaction has to be processed by the organisation in a particular way? For instance to take the gas account as an example, this could be paid in one of several ways - including 'bill payment' - out of the Moneyback account. In that case, does cashback only accrue if a 'debit card payment' is made - either in person or online? [People will understand the distinction between 'bill payment' and 'debit card payment' I hope!]

    Thanks in advance.

The offer said "debit card purchases" so I should have thought it pretty obvious that bill payments were NOT included, Milarky:
The Halifax is stepping up its attack on the Big Four banks by launching the first ever current account in the UK paying cashback on debit card purchases.

Martin refers to the alternative of using A&L's Premier Plus current account and money back credit card as a better value option than the Halifax deal, for most customers, and interestingly enough A&L's press office have issue a press release to that effect.

Maybe they are reading MSE ???

Well I'm not confusing them either - my point was that if you can pay a bill by debit card that is quite different from paying the same bill directly from your bank account either via a cheque or a BACS payment.

When a debit card payment is reclaimed by a non-banking organisation like BG (say) they are a 'merchant' just like any other non-banking organisation. Halifax will therefore have to list the excluded organisations as representing 'bill payment' or else it will go through as cashback-eligible. For instance, what if you buy something on your Moneyback Debit Card from a 'BG shop' [if they exist]? in that case you would insist it was eligible, I imagine? So are Halifax always going to exclude certain merchants or only some of the transactions going through them?

[I think we'll have to wait and see what the answer is though, rather than jumping too hastily]

  • I can't find this card/account anywhere. Anyone seen this online or at a branch?
  • Hiw does this work with supermarket cashback then?

Say I do a £30 shop and take £50 cashback, ie a total transaction of £80.

Would the Halifax cashback be 30p or 80p?

Good question, I would guess it would be 80p As I am sure the banks only see supermarket as a payment.

I would be interested in hearing the answer.
