Some Councils do not accept credit cards for paying Council Tax but do accept debit cards.

Will Council Tax payment be classed as a bill payment or a payment for services?

My guess would be 'Bill Payment'

  • Just a quick post to clarify a few points on our new card:

Paying credit card bills, buying travellers cheques and foreign money and cash advances will not accrue the 1% moneyback. Paying your gas bill would benefit but we would point out that the discounts available for paying by DD would probably be more worthwhile to most.

After the first £10,000 spend moneyback continues to accrue at 0.1%, it is not capped.

Our research - from independent sources, suggests that £100 is achievable for most households, and we DO want customers to get this. The economics are such that we want as many customers as possible to achieve this.

This is NOT a loss leader. The account pricing works out on the same basis as our main current account which pays 3% interest and has a 8.9% overdraft rate. In addition, we benefit from lower transaction costs and we do receive a flat fee of a few pence from every debit card transaction interchange fee. If the "big 4" were to offer these benefits it would cost them around £800 million a year because they start from a totally different cost position to us.

We don't beleive this is the right account for everyone and we've tried to make this as clear as possible. Some customers, who use their current account as a quasi-savings account, would be better off with an account paying higher interest, but those who transact a lot and keep a relatively low balance in their current account would be better off with "moneyback". And for the 28million customers of the "big 4", both our 3% account and "moneyback" represent a massive difference in value.

Ok, hope that doesn't sound too much like an advert and it makes things a bit clearer.

  • Oh and on the question of Section 75 and debit cards...

Visa Debit is covered under the Visa scheme and, therefore, you have the same protection as a Visa Credit Card. You do not get this with Switch.

Do you have any written proof of this claim as Victor Meldrew would say I don't believe it!

  • No but I am the one who explained it to Working Lunch!

So if I have a dispute with my brand spanking new HBOS visa DEBIT card and I phone up wanting a refund of a payment what do I ask the phone operator??
Do I say I think I am covered by the terms and conditions, a copy I have in front of me or do I say that a HBOS spokesperson said such and such on Working Lunch and want to claim??
If you cannot substantiate it; IMO you should not have said it!

  • Hey, just trying to help!

If you have a Halifax or Bank of Scotland Visa Debit Card and you have an issue with the purchase that is covered by Sect. 75 then do the following:

    1. try the vendor
    2. if you have no joy and you think you have a claim write, including copies of invoices and agreements, to :

    Customer Relations
    Halifax plc
    Trinity Rd
    Halifax

  • Just to repeat the question then does any HBOS leaflet or terms and conditions that a customer may sign and be given a copy of, actually state that a debit card has the same right as a credit card under section 75 of the CCA?
    Eric
  • and to repeat - its not Halifax's Ts & Cs which cover this but the Visa agreement.

If you choose not to accept my word then that's ok, this is a message board and I could be anyone.
