Irish licence, accident in the last year, yeah, hes a joy to insure. Currently playing about with moneysupermarket calculator trying to find vaguely affordable insurance quotes!Debt January 1st 2018 £96,999.81Met NIM 23/06/2008

Mine would be lower but I lent my car to my Mum whole I was at uni as my dad crashed hers. She did the insurance in her name so i haven't built up any no claims of my own.
OH is hoping to do his test again some time when his training has calmed down a bit. We will then probably share my car but am definitely making him pay the extra on insurance as he will be a new , male driver under 25.0 -
So got some quotes. Slug is NIMs 11 year old Hyundai Coupe, Bu is my 7 year old Alfa Romeo 147.
Slug - NIM main driver, me named, fully comp - £683
Bu - NIM main driver, me named, fully comp - £1341
Bu - Me main driver, NIM named, fully comp - £613
So actually not as bad as I feared. NIM actually will have 1 years NCB built up through my policy (one of the reasons we went with Bell), and he's swapping his Irish licence for a British one, so that does bring his quote down a bit. Last year it was about £700 for 3rd party only on his car, and all these are fully comp this year (although might go 3rd party anyway on his banger - if he crashes it it's not likely to be economical to repair it). That said we really can't afford him to be main driver on a bigger/newer car as the quotes clearly show! If we do go 3rd party we can expect the quotes on the slug to come down maybe another £150 from that.Debt January 1st 2018 £96,999.81Met NIM 23/06/2008

I found that on my old car the difference between 3rd party and fully comp was only about £7 annually - I guess because they think that any major damage and you'll just scrap a car of that age/value. Have you thought about adding your mum/dad as an extra driver to bring it down a bit further?Weightloss: 14.5/65lb0 -
Aye we added dad this year, he brought it down by about another £30 so would do that again when we get to the detailed quote stage. Would look at the difference for fully comp/3rd party. If we have a £300 excess though it would be a bit daft to go fully comp as if it crashed we'd either have to pay all the repairs anyway, or they'd pay a staggering £200 towards them before it was uneconomical to repair and it was scrapped!Debt January 1st 2018 £96,999.81Met NIM 23/06/2008

Some days are just like that - I'm generally worse for it than NIM!
He's a right sweetie, I emailed him to show him the car quotes, he asked why I got them, I said to see if we can afford you a better car as you obviously really want one and he apologised and said he must have been going on about it too much, as he would be fine with a car that just doesn't leak oil!
Oh and an update on that front, a brand new part from Hyundai is only £65! Best of all though it is acutally 2 seperate parts, he can buy one without the other if we can work out which one it is he needs, and our mechanic will fit it for about £20 so thats a huge saving on what we were gearing up to pay.Debt January 1st 2018 £96,999.81Met NIM 23/06/2008
