My Dad used to bike to and from work when I was little, did it a few times last year too. It's a 20mile round trip, if I was better on my Pashley I'd happily do it! My brother is pretty fit and riding home from work almost crippled the poor lad.
Dad is on about selling the plot of land the house was meant to be built on. Although I fully understand, current climate and what not they need to money for houses they already have, I can't help feeling a little gutted! At the same time, I'm kind of relieved, as lovely as that house would have been it means me and OH will be able to go for our (read my) dream house!0 -
Plus it means you can do it when you feel ready Cinny, not feel rushed into it because the house dictates it.
I'm actually of the opinion that lowered land prices make now a good time to be building, but on a house like that where there is a fairly small profit margin to play with, I guess if more falls were to occur he'd just break even, so its not worth the risk.Debt January 1st 2018 £96,999.81Met NIM 23/06/2008

I think he said it's going to cost about 110k to build (incl. land costs) and seeing how old houses around here sell for about 100k, it isn't worth the risk. Better safe than sorry and whatnot!0

Aye that's too close for comfort. You seem relieved rather than distraught tbh.
Think I'm gonna go into the petrol station on the way home, and get NIM a bar of Dairy Milk, it's a rubbish anniversary present but we're skint and I know he'll appreciate it!
ETA oooh, or if I buy butter I could make cupcakes! Much better!Debt January 1st 2018 £96,999.81Met NIM 23/06/2008

Cupcakes win over chocolate anyday! Plus you'll get much more cupcakes than you will chocolate.
It's a mixture, I saw it coming as they've been umming and ahhing over it this past week. Can't really be helped, I could easily throw a paddy but I've got to think what's best for the company. It's going to be passed onto my brother, cousin and me in at some point, and it could get us into more debt for something that won't pay off, even in the long run.
Lets hope I don't win that Smeg fridge now!0 -
If you win the fridge you can send it to me Cinny!
I think that it sounds like your Dad has made the right decision, especially with the economy like it is! And you're right, you can have your dream house when you're ready for it!
Cupcakes sound like a very good idea Dinah! I'm tempted to make them but we're supposed to be cutting down on treats, I wonder if there are 'healthy' cupcakes??? Hmmm...Overcome the notion that you must be ordinary. It robs you of the chance to be extraordinary!Goal Weight 140lb Starting Weight: 160lb Current Weight 145lb0 -
No no, keep your fingers crossed and I'll have it! I'd move out to live with my smeg fridge!!
God I'm sooo hot in here, I'm sure it breaks some kind of EU rules. My boss just says to go down and work in the other office but when you do that nothing's set up right on the computer and all the paperwork's here anyhow so you can't get anything done. Not that I'm getting a lot done as it is. Sorry I'm waffling in the manner of an overheated goat.
ETA, damn Birdie got in before me to claim the fridge! That's what you get for waffling!Weightloss: 14.5/65lb0 -
Lemon cupcakes are decidedly healthy. They contain fruit and everything!Debt January 1st 2018 £96,999.81Met NIM 23/06/2008

Boo! I was going to pop to Tesco on the way home to get the cupcake ingredients, but I'm not sure I haven't forgotten anything. I had a thought 'oooh Cinny has the same book, I'll ask her to check' - but the other lass didn't come in today so Cinny isn't at home! I'll stop rambling now.Debt January 1st 2018 £96,999.81Met NIM 23/06/2008
