  • I thought I read somewhere that it was just the dentists who didn't want them sold in the UK?

I'm sure I have seen them on sale in chemists in France, so it seems they aren't banned in the EU.
RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.

  • ive tried every type of teeth whitening possible but the one i stick with is the white smile wand. you dont need to wear messy strips or put those horrible strips on you just brush the activator onto your teeth and its only £20 and id say it lasts me like 25 applications you can get it in health and beauty shops but i think its cheaper on their website whitesmilewand.com

Hmm..the above post looks like spam to me. New poster, making two posts on different MSE boards promoting the same product.

  • about 10 years ago my dentist made me teeth whitening trays and gel so that i could whiten one of my two front teeth as it was yellower than the adjacent one - ablut the same colour as my incisors which i understand are often darker. no idea what strength the gel was - it was quite rare back then so i didn't realise there were options :)
i can't remember how long i had to leave the gel on - definitely for longer than 20 minutes and definitely longer than a week! I was never convinced that my front teeth were the same colour although i think that there was an improvement. (maybe i wanted to get my moneys worth as i think it was £200 or £300)
i have noticed however that my 2 front teeth are getting more unevenly coloured again, and there is a bit of mottling, so i want to buy some new gel to use with my existing tray.

I'm thinking of getting one tube of 23% c.peroxide and remineraliser from an ebay seller with high sales numbers and good feedback to make them match again. i'll be careful with the gel and watch out for sensitivity.

my real concern though is why are they unequally coloured in the first place? is one tooth dying slowly?! is it more porous? i do drink balck coffee and drink red wine, but don't smoke and brush regularly.

i changed dentists and moved away 5 years ago so don't feel like i can call her up, and doubt they would even have my records now. Any thoughts please.

Make an appointment with your dentist and discuss this. Bleaching mottled teeth may very well make the mottling worse.

Darkened teeth could be anything from the nerve dying, the root of the teeth resorping to other less serious problems.

I can't understand if the looks and the HEALTH of these front teeth is so important to you you would buy chemicals from a stranger and put them in your mouth in contact with very delicate tissues and not even talk to a professional with whom presumably you should have built a trusting relationship.
  • Just bought a kit from a company called the the smile place.
    www. themsmileplace co. uk
a friend recommended it and having been using it for 5 days now I can start to see the difference. was 79pounds and thought might shell out a little bit more as this uses the same materials as the dentist but a slightly cheaper than the 350 pound quote I got from my dentis

I'm looking into getting my teeth whitened as I had my braces taken off a couple of months ago, so I now have a lovely smile but teeth which look a bit yellow.

I don't drink coffee, red wine, or smoke so I guess it's just one of those things.

My OH offered to pay for the treatment as an Xmas pressie and a local beauty salon is doing a laser treatment, but having read some of this thread it seems the tray and gel method from my dentist may be better.

The only thing is I have to wear a retainer a couple of nights a week and don't know whether this would be appropriate.

    Any advice please?

You'd be fine with gel & tray. Just do it on the nights you don't wear the retainer.

Unlike a brace, you don't have to wear a bleaching tray every night to get a result - just most nights.

A tray for bleaching and some retainers are quite similar beasts - but you shouldn't use a retainer to carry the gel (It covers the gum, and if the gel is on your gum for any length of time it will irritate it) and you shouldn't rely on the tray to act as a retainer (They're too soft and flexible).

Good Luck. Ortho followed by whitening really is the best way to get a healthy white smile. So much better than chopping around at the teeth and whacking on porcelain.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
