Yes GHDs are expensive, but they are the best on the market - noone can come close. I have been using them for almost 4 years and have tried many others over the years but they are just not the same.

It doesn't matter where you buy them in terms of warranty, as they use a company called Jemella for all their returns - who replace them for a brand new pair if a fault develops. I have used them a couple of times, and always have received a brand new pair within a week. You don't need a stamped guarantee, just send them recorded delivery to Jemella.

PM me if you want the address.

Its a friends birthday coming up and I thought I could buy her a pair of straighteners. To be honest I don't really know what Im looking for except a nice cheap price. So I thought I could ask the ever knowing people of this board to help me out.

    Cheers

I've noticed a selection of good straighteners at half price in Ethel Austin lately

I got a really good pair of ceramic temperature control hair straighteners from my local Lloyds pharmacy so it might be worth trying there. It depends on what you are looking for as well, as you can get them with steam, temperature control, ceramic etc - the argos catolouge explains all the functions. Personally I prefer ceramic, and dont rate the steam ones. Try your local argos as well- prices start at £14.99

They sometimes have some good ones on QVC, "compliments" I think they are called. I had a pair and they were pretty good for the money (although not as good as my half price bargain Vidal Sassoon ones from Boots, but they were still £30 in the sale). Superdrug is always worth a look too.

I would also say go for Ceramic, make it solid if you can (the coating can eventually come off coated ones, and they can start to stick).

Other things to think about - plate width - narrow plates are probably more flexible, you can do flicks and fringes with them, but for someone with long hair, wider plates are probably better as they will be quicker. Personally I prefer narrow plates.

Adjustable heating - also useful, those that aren't adjustable aren't always so good for thick, strong, curly hair - you have to keep going over the hair again and again, not so good, but if she has fine hair, then you don't want something that could practically fire a clay pot!

If you have a bit of extra cash, get her some sectioning clips too (but don't go to Boots, they are expensive there), makes an easier and better job of straightening when you use them.

    Hope this helps!

if you can afford it go for solid ceramic.. coated will do if you're on a shoestring..

both amazon and ebuyer had good priced straighteners.. :) I got my sister JML ones from amazon and they seem pretty good even though they're not a well known brand.

go for narrow/medium sized plates if you want most options (flicks and things).. wide ones do straightening only - but are good for thick long hair..

You won't be able to find them on a normal website or shop for less than that I'm afraid. So many people still want them and are prepared to pay that the price has not gone down much in the years they have been out.
I bough mine off ebay and they were perfect - I just made sure to look for an auction that said brand new and boxed. I got them in the end for about £70 and that was a while ago so they may be going for a bit cheaper on there now.
What did I do at work before I discovered MSE?!

DFD - WAS: a while ago

NOW - not sure, due to boyfriend going back to uni for masters and now pgce. Worth it in the long run!
Proud to be dealing with my debts!
