Car scrappage petition

What a stupid post.Mortgage free
Vocational freedom has arrived0 -
Its not being paid for by the extra VAT it generates, the extra VAT generated will go towards it but it will still need around £200m of tax payers net of the VAT generated.
This scheme is not going to help the back street local garages who would employ a large amount of the 800000 you quote. It will reduce the amount of older cars that they can repair and bring in loads of new cars that can only be worked on by the main dealers as they are designed not to be repaired outside the dealer network.
This is not very environmentally friendly as a huge amount of a cars carbon footprint is in the manufacture so it would be better for the environment keeping old cars on the road.
I cannot understand why the government wants to bail out loss making businesses with tax payers money. The next thing you'll be saying is they should bail out the banks0 -
Not gonna get into this arguement all over again, However some key facts for everyone to consider before they just repeat what they've read in tabloids.
It would save people looking at buying new cars money.
It would save Jobs.
The actual cost to our Goverment would not be £2000 odd per vehicle, once you take into account extra VAT collections, not having to pay for unemployed workers on the dole but rather collecting PAYE instead. Not to mention the rolling benefit this would have to our economy. I wouldn't like to specualte but it would be hundreds if anything.
We do have a car industry, a very large one. It is still one of the top employers in the country.
The scrappage scheme has prevented 1000's of jobs IN Germany been lost and to a lesser extent France and Italy.
Old cars however well maintained are a lot more polluting than new ones.
On average a car emits 85% of it emission during its life. 10% during Manufacture and 5% during disposal.
Any affect on used car prices would be short lived!0 -
A good post Lemonade Pockets.
Any scrappage scheme would be very much self financing in the short term, wether it makes much different in the long term is unknown, as it's the short term problem that needs fixing its a great idea at present.
As for the cars not being made here, so what. Most of the cost of the vehicle is not the manufacturing but the design, advertising, distribution, cleaning, dealer margin and admin processes. Regardless of car a huge percentage (most of it on small cars) of the sale cost ends up here in the UK.0 -
67% of cars sold in the uk either are produced here or have parts produced here.
Unfortunately i haven't seen any figures which include R+D but that would obviously by higher still0 -

At last someone who sees the bigger picture!0 -
Can I scrap my 9 year old Micra for 2K cash or do you have to put it towards a brand new car? if the latter, it's no good for me as I'm not planning on splashing out any money on a brand new car just to get 2K off. :rolleyes:0

the scheme is a load of balls0
-
do you just get the 2k if you buy a new car or do you get it for buying a newer car?
what will stop people just buying any old wreck in order to get the scrappage fee.
i own a 15 year old rover. is this now effectively worth 2k off the price of a new car? what if someone who wants a new car doesn't own an old one - seems it would be worth them buying my old from me at an inflated price in order to get the discount off their new vehicle.
any offers? :jThose who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0 -

maybe you can find someone who will?
could be a good new business idea - trading in old cars just to get the scrappage fees for new purchasers....(i always knew there was a capitalist b*****d in me just waiting to get out!)Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0
