I watched this on the catchup TV thing online.
I think it was typical of the medias attitude to everything. We are all clueless and must be shown how to do the simplest things in big colourful pictures with very basic descriptions. So we are shown how to sew up a cushion cover (expect to pay £30 in a big london shop according to Kirsty) and put flowers in a vase.
I dont mind Kirsty but I do think there are numerous 'instruction' programs and books that have very little useful content apart from pretty pictures.

I can't watch her - she just grates against me. I'd like to see the programme, maybe voice overed. Any volunteers?

I guess I can watch it with the subtitles on whilst muted!

  • I have to say I was dissapointed too. I was under the impression that this program was going to show you how to do up your home using different crafts whilst saving money. I don't think that glass blowing and making your own mugs as this. As others have said I would liked to have seen the chairs getting upholstered, her bargain hunting a bit more etc.

Oh and please don't shoot me down but I thought the market she went to was really expensive!!

I will carry on watching it hough as I'm nosey.

I think, dare I say it, that if you like the Tightwad Gazette you may find Thrifty Ways a disappointment. I thought it was a good little book for beginners in thrift but not for more advanced thriftsters;) Just my opinion, don't everyone yell at me:D

Here are the links for the books discussed. I definitely prefer "The complete tightwad gazette", as it has millions of tips and is like a bible on thrift and it is well worn here but "Thrifty ways for modern days" is not bad for those starting out on this side of the pond.

I was disappointed to be honest. It would be nice to go and blow your own glasses, however I am afraid that a quick trip to ikea is much cheaper, we live near a glass blowing centre and the classes cost hundreds of pounds. I dont know I just found the whole "Thrify" idea a joke, there has been thousands spent on that house. I prefer a more "Make do and mend" approach in my house..

I'll be watching this one with interest! Just yesterday our new bathroom was finally finished - all OS! :j
Our entire 'Victorian' suite (inc. roll top bath) was £200, glass mosaic tiles to cover an entire wall £30 from Ebay, wooden panelling was free from our neighbour who likes 'modern stuff', and a beautiful Louis chair was £8 from auction......
We sanded the original floorboards ourselves (Horrible, choking job!) and considering it's a big room at 4 x 3 metres and needed to be totally gutted I estimate that even including our wonderful 'mates rates' plumber the whole lot cost less than £500.
Interesting to see what Kirstie does with hers - I bet we won't see HER covered in dust from head to foot and spitting out bits of tile like we were!:D
