I loved the crochet throw she put in the play room, she paid £25 for it, I have 3 or 4 of these, but I made them all myself, I used wool I already had & have been given loads of odd balls, I bet I couldn't sell mine for £25 though

As I've made mine I don't care if they get dragged in the garden, when I was dog sitting, I put them on the floor for the dog to lay on, I washed them, put them on the line & as soon as they were dry DGS put them over the garden chairs to make a tent, lol.

Kirsty thought about buying a wreck, and being paid to make a programme 'doing it up' and filling it with artisan made crafty stuff...and pitched it to the programme commissioners or whoever.
I take my hat off to her. One fab idea that - "you all make it pretty builders whilst I bob about visiting glassblowers and stained glass makers and screenprinters and get some chi chi little one-off designs made up and I'll visit top notch designers like Anouska Hempel and see what they're up to and tell the great British public how EASY it all is laa laa laa"Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY"I would like more sisters, that the taking out of one, might not leave such stillness" Emily DickinsonJanice 1964-2016

hi all, i think we ought to let ch 4 know that there 100's of genuine os,ers and they can all be found here:D !
or maybe a book of all the collective tried and tested ways we have revamped our homes on pennies instead of 100's of pounds
as you can probably guess, i feel just a little bit irritated by her smugness, not to say that there must be lots of people who would be put off ,as seeing the prog, think that it can only be done if you have the money to begin with.
we all know it can be done free [freecycle] or charity shops and revamped.
have a good wkend all.Saving for another hound :j

I've been reading this thread with interest- I think the house (or at least the shell of it) is great, but I'm not amazed with Kirstie's taste- hated the yellow bath, the shell sink, the awful handmade wallpaper- just shows that money doesn't buy taste eh?
I do wonder though whether this thread should be in the OS section at all- OK, so she's re-using stuff, rescuing it, restoring it, changing an item to what she wants- and I can see that aspect of what she's doing is exactly OS ethic. But the crafts element might not be- buy a lampshade at TK Maxx for £15 that's silk- rather than go to a class, buy the fabric, make the shade etc etc which will cost much more. I suppose that's the "home made" in the title though!
As many wise people have found, the value of something is what another will pay. And Kirstie will pay more than many of us can contemplate. Door knobs? EEK!:eek:Won Mulberry Bag Jan 090 -
Phew! Thought I must have had a 'good tate' by=pass wgen some other folk were raving about this programme....I just don't 'get it'
We are keen diyers & have to be very conscious of costs so totally agree the given description of this show is farcical.
I've tried to get on with The Salvager but he too seems to pay a fair whack for bits in rec yards that he does up. Of course, another thing is having all the equipment.......I saw once where they used a router on sheets of ply, to give the impression of tongue & groove panelling. It's that sort of thing I like to see.
I used to enjoy watching Anna Ryder-Richardson & Lynda Barker on that show where they used whatever was found in people's sheds & things, altho I often wondered how much had been put there specifically
There was another good one, used to be on BBC1 from 10 o'clock week-day mornings & they had tips like cutting across the fingers of rubber gloves to make your own lackie bands! Let's have more of those back sez I

Thanks exactly why i posted it here - the 'is it OS or isn't it' debate.
I think it's OS on a non-OS budget, and it's always entertaining if not always useful/practical to a 'normal' person.
The OS ethics are there and so far i have been inspired to do my own things like covering an old magnetic noticeboard to make it pretty, make my own kitchen curtains, and turn an old chest into a cushioned window seat.
All on the cheap.
Not her ideas but certainly inspired by her gung-ho attitude to DIY and breaking away from the ikea highstreet mould of everyone having the same stuff.Moneysavinghopeful :rotfl:0 -

It's not something that should be encouraged (or even thought about.... grooooo) - any proctologist will tell you it's a bad idea:

and this from a medical website:
'Hemorrhoids result from activities that increase intravenous pressure, resulting in distention and engorgement. Predisposing factors include prolonged sitting,'
I can't remember which poster said she'd now been persuaded to do this following the programme, but my advice to her is - Don't! Stick with your original instincts!
some of us can't help being in there for a while :whistle:Just call me Nodwah the thread killer0 -

I think a more accurate name for her attitude to DIY is 'GALMI' - aka -'get a little man in'Reason for edit? Can spell, can't type!0
