Hmmm, really interesting thread this. I'm kinda in two minds about the whole programme, I enjoy it as it is pretty much the only crafty thing that has been on TV for YEARS! But...I too get a little annoyed at the large budget side of it. However, I wasn't aware that it had been mooted as a money-saving venture - just that it was going to be crafty-based.
One good thing is that it has inspired me to finish a load of half-started projects that have been kicking around for a while, so all-in-all a good thing for me! (and I am enjoying playing "Count-Kirsty's-Coats")
Was it just me or did I hear a thing at the end about getting in contact for the 2nd series??? Perhaps an opportunity to get more of a "Scrimpers"-type programme next time round????

Yes, the info is here.Is your home dull? Is it full of flat pack furniture bought from high street stores? Do you want to change it to say something special about you? If so, why not think about enlisting the help of Kirstie Allsopp to turn it into a homemade home?
We're looking for potential contributors to take part in the next series of Kirstie's Homemade Home. Kirstie wants to help people create their own dream interiors using reclaimed and restored second hand furniture and handmade objects from fantastic craftsmen and women around the country.
Please contact us and describe your home and why you think it needs Kirstie's help to turn it into a homemade home.0 -
Actually, that reminds me, I saw a post on the Downsizer forum asking for participants for a new tv series. They're looking for Britains's thriftiest householders to share their cost cutting tips etc. Much more MSE!0

Love the new forum! Thanks for mentioning it. The request from the Alsopp show sounds patronising, was my first response....Reason for edit? Can spell, can't type!0 -
Hi buying fabric new for quilting is not cheap, at my local quilt shop it ranges from £6/m to £14/m. Then there is the amount of time it takes. I quilt, but when my son wanted a quilt for his bed I bought one from Laura Ashley in the sale (50% off) as it was cheaper than me making one . The trouble is with clothes being so cheap from Primark and the supermarkets, people don't realise how much a handmade quilt can cost. I've almost finished a double bed sized quilt which I have sewn by hand, it will be insured for the local quilt show at £1000  and that is at min wage! It would be good if more people get into craft and sewing because of the programme, in quilting there are far more retired quilters than young ones eventually the skills may die out unless younger people become interested.0

I love patchwork and quilting, although as you say Looby the fabric costs so much that it can't really be anything other than a very expensive hobby. I've got a couple of quilts on the go that I've been plugging away at for ages - most times I refer to them as patchwork guilts lol
I've seen a couple of episodes of this on 4 OD and I really don't know what to make of it. It's lovely to see crafts on tv but I just can't help but feel it's all a bit staged - most of the skips look like they've been put there by the film crew, and filled with antiques and a couple of bin-bags of bubble wrap so it looks authenticIt also makes me laugh that now Kirstie's telling us all to fill our homes with colour and clutter, and make them more personal. Isn't that the exact opposite of what she and her ilk have spent the last ten years telling us - empty the house, paint it magnolia and de-personalise it as much as possible!

i knew the mirror would make an appearence latter:j:j
ha ha - the mirror was very unflattering - maybe that is why the origional owner put it in the skipor maybe painting a mirror pink is unflattering to the skin tones:beer: haha!!

I enjoy the programme. I think it gives some good ideas like the skipping and making your own things.
Not sure how relevant it is in parts though whilst going through a recession. She carefully forgets to mention how much it costs to get someone to re-upholster a chair, make a fantastic quilt, make glass blown ornaments.
Also whilst she is going round taking things out of skips how much of a fortune is she paying the builders to do the hard graft of transforming the derralict place she bought. Thousands I dont wonder.
The finished result is wonderful but very little of that is down to her skills. Not exactly the homemade home she advertises it as.
