who wants to drink in pubs. i have not been in one for nine years since a gave it up..we live in a Cheshire village but only a few weeks ago someone got killed while out celebrating his 48th birthday and that is one of the reasons i stopped drinking because there were too many people getting drunk or drugged and fighting and you had to watch your back all the time...Chester and Liverpool looked like war zones some weekends..that's why some pubs are closing...far too much drink and violence for my liking..
It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.

Checking the trade websites online, the lease at most of my local pubs have been up for sale in the last couple of years. The real blame for the decline of the pub is greedy over-financed pubcos, and changing social attitudes. Gone are the days when the husband would get paid, give wifey a few quid, and blow his wages at the pub. Times change.
    Been away for a while.
  • I think the smoking ban has had a huge effect that the government doesn't want to admit to.

Going out in winter if you smoke is miserable, end of. Young people will still do it because of the desire to pull as much as anything else but older people are far more likely to stay at home and drink and smoke indoors.

I quit a couple of months ago and have been out twice since then. It was nice to be able to go out and sit inside but pubs just don't have the same atmosphere that they used to have for some reason.

The anti-smoking brigade got what they wanted. Funny, they all said that they'd be going to pubs a lot more when it happened, so why aren't they?

The truth of it is that the anti-smoking brigade never used to go to pubs in the beginning - it was nothing more than a 'these-are-my-views-and-I'm-going-to-make-sure-they're-forced-on-everyone-else' mission, and it worked.

Well, I didn't see this thread when in started last night because I was in my local. It is struggling too (owned by Punch I think) and I'm pretty good friends with the landlord who gets increasingly frustrated. He could buy most of his stock cheaper at the local cash & carry, but if he did so & Punch found out he'd be kicked out.

To be honest, I think the local pubs are the ones that should be saved, because of mine I feel really part of the local community for the first time ever - I know so many of my neighbours through the pub, and actually since the smoking ban more families are coming in too.

The big chains like Wetherspoons sell beer so cheap that it encourages people to down loads, and then just kick people out if they get too rowdy. Smaller locals don't tend to have trouble in the same way, because the landlord/lady sees it as their business & their home, so will refuse to serve someone (or I've seen cases where the landlord has checked that someone a bit tipsy gets walked home!)

Sorry for the rambling, i feel quite strongly about local pubs (obviously) as mine is so important to me

Wetherspoons buy bulk product with short sell buy dates at reduced prices (and sometimes slightly out of date) then punt it out cheap.

They have the volume of outlets to be able to do this and a local tied publican could never access purchase prices at these levels.

They are effectively the Tesco of the pub world.

Is it right? Well it's free market trading, is it moral? That's a different question altogether.

... more families are coming in too.

This is one reason why I drink in pubs LESS. They are not family places and I don't want to go and find kids running about, nor do I want to be made to feel guilty if I happen to swear in front of someone's prescious little baby.
