Still compulsory in parts of Shropshire I believe, provided it's not on a Sunday of course."An arrogant and self-righteous Guardian reading tvv@t".

Q. What happened to that disgusting old dog you used to hang around with?
A. I married her.0 -
We have stopped having (cough) relationships with animals round here now.(it was only a few years ago though)
My dogs are dogs, not partners, but they are pretty important to me. If I were a single person living alone in a rural spot the dog and the the person at the bar might be the only people I spoke to regularly. Its nice if without drawing attention to that the publican takes time to say ''How's fido?''because to that person Fido is everythingIn a local they know that sort of thing.

They can't. I feel sorriest for people in villages, where the pub and the post office, and any other little shops close.
I live in a village & there are 2 pubs in it (one of which is owned by a dodgy, perv, know-it-all, stuck up his own *** idiot).
I can have a word & see if he will open up near you...
PS Out of the other 5 pubs within 2 miles 2 of them need shutting also...Not Again0 -

Well if you don't like my pub you know what to do... Yer barred.:)0 -
I live in a city where the pubs are falling fast. My local, 200 yards away is struggling big time. Really nice couple have it lay, on a lot of entertainment. They are middle aged and if it all goes wrong they are sunk. Homeless.
The rent is £25,000 a year. It`s a scandal.0 -
Pub companies such as enterprise and punch have created a business model that involves charging tenants riduculous rent and then charging them considerably more for their beer etc than they could buy if they weren't tied. The only way the tenants can try and survive is by charging loads for their drinks. The supermarkets operate a business model which involves selling certain goods for little or no profit to make you believe they are the cheapest.
My local sells bottles of Becks for £2.70, I am still drinking my way through the bottles I bought before Christmas, 3 X 18 bottles for £20 or 37p a bottle and clubcard points thrown in.
Tim Martin from Wetherspoons was on the news the other day saying that they made about £35 million profit yet were responsible for over £170 million in various taxes.
I also remember when they brought in those cans with the widget you were lucky if you could buy them in a supermarket for less than £1, beer in the pub was not that much more. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see why so many pubs are closing now and I bet as a nation we are drinking more.0 -
Fungus, which pub?We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -
Its the smoking ban that has tipped it over the edge, look at this article scroll down just passed half way
in 2006 2 pubs a week were shutting
in 2007 it jumped to 27 a week
in 2009 its pedicted to be 39 per week
The jump from 2 to 27 means something massive happened in 2007 to decimate sales.
