    He said clearing disk, i.e. wipe all the recordings (but I thought a factory reset would do that anyway)?

    Factory reset is just setting parameters to the defaults they arrived from the factory with, sometimes software upgrades have left old data causing issues that this resolves. Only formatting the disc actually clears it. It's fairly drastic but can sometimes resolve issues caused by older discs that have been filled over and over and become a bit cluttered (i.e in need of a defrag in windows terms)
