marshallka wrote: »Hi dialysis, we tried for the student loan thing when he was going to college (before the apprenticeship he did a BTEC in computers and then part way through the next bit) but they said that loans were given to those doing degrees only. My son was not and although full time at college he got nothing in regards to money. He then went self employed in the building trade and this was a nightmare and then took a young apprenticeship. They knew his age when they took him on and he only got £2 an hour for 12 months and then after the 12 months they had to pay him mimimum wage and being 21 then it was more than they would have to pay a younger apprentice. He was doing fantastic as well both in work and college although he did complain that he was not learning so much of the actual work he was supposed to be doing. It was more general dogs body and then when he reached 21 they got rid saying he was not suitable and onto the next young apprentice they went. We took this to a tribunal and they settled out of court and this was before I knew what i know now in that the solicitors took 25% and then also the firm that got him the solicitor also took 25% so he was left with next to nothing. From then on he has had no work and has applied for loads of jobs and he is lucky if he ever gets a reply. He did have an interview a couple of months ago at somewhere and also got into the final 7 but did not get on. He is now at a loss cause he has got qualifications but his apprenticeship was never completed and its knocked his confidence also. I feel so sorry for these young ones too. I have ranted on here a few times on the benefits thread too. My son tried to get on and passed what he went to college for with merits but still no-one want to employ someone of that age (with no experience) when they can get someone to do the job for next to nothing.
My one and only dream would to be my son in full time employment again. Its just so hard and it worries the life out of me.
I have read the telepgraph article it must be very worrying for you with the interest rates I dont know what to advise hun but I know how you feel we just keep getting knocked back all the time but I send you loads of hugs but I cant find the icon again, I am sure someone moves it when I want it lol:D;)0 -
Hi Marshallka That it absolutly disgusting the way your son has been treated it is slave labour £2.00 an hour:eek: they have probalby done this loads of times and will do it again. My son id doing a BTEC in computers too he did the first part a couple of years ago and is now doing part three. I was banking on the student loan but from what you have said he wont get that either. He is really down at the moment and is worried about what he is going to do it is strange but it makes you feel like a failure as a parent when I cant provide for him to go to college I just wish we could help him but we have no chance. I understand how worried you are Marshallka it is soul distroying to see your child do so well and then not get anything in the end. I really hope that he finds something very soon.

I would still try for the loan thingy with your son. My son did the computers BTEC and passed and then went on for the other two years and packed it up half way through as he wanted money and we could not afford to provide all the things he wanted so he did the apprenticeship after trying self employed(but only earning £80 a week and it was slave labour in the end). Its so hard for young ones these days and the jobs market and even when they have a few qualifications but no experience...
I have always thought though that doing something was better than doing nothing but its not paid off for us.0 -

I think the thing is employers want people with experience but how do the kids get that if they cant get a job. We did try to steer him towards a trade at one point he was going to go to college to do joinery or a sparky, I thought that would be better cos theres more chance of a job at the end but you never know do you? but as he had already completed the first national diploma he thought it would be better to go on and complete it. He is going into the bank tomorrow and if no luck we will try this loan. What we need now is our compo and then I could help him out but I cant see it arriving in a week unfortunatly.
. If I say anything I am wrong in whatever I say as it was me that wanted him to go college and also do the apprenticeship so for now (accept when i lost my rag) I just keep my gob shut.
I hope your son gets somewhere dialysis.0 -

I cant understand why my son is expected to pay £700.00 to do these courses when he doesnt work, is at full time college and is expected to do two night courses as well and work to pay for his course. When the hell will he get the time to work to pay for this. like Pinknico says the governemnet wnat people in work well they should help older students more. I am sorry for ranting but it is awful for the young and my son and marshallkas are stuck and going nowhere. I have just read on a website that you cant get a student loan if you are in further education only in higher education whats the difference, you are still trying to make something of yourself0
