Change of subject here guys, no more knickers and thongies:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:My son started college this week he is 20 so classed as an adult learner. He has been lucky enough to get his course paid for as he doesnt work, but as he didnt get a good grade in english and maths at GCSE level he has to do them again. This is a condition of the course he is on. They have told him today that he will have to pay to do them at a cost of £700.00:eek: as you know my situation we cant afford this and neither can he. What is so annoying is that if he had been in prison he would get them free:mad: no offence to anyone but he is trying to better himself and there are so many hurdles to cross. He is not entilted to any benefits, which would also give him the course free, and all he can get is adult learning support. He is going to the bank but he doesnt really want to get into any debt so has anyone any ideas or info about what help he could get. Cheers.:T

I know the feeling here dialysis. My son is 22 and out of work and did go to college and passed with merits but still no job prospects since last year when he got finished (as soon as hit 21) on the apprenticeship he was doing cause they did not want to pay him. :mad:He was only one month off getting his level two in what he doing also but needed a work based placement to finish and although his day release he got the BEST marks anyone could get he could not get taken on at that age as no-one wanted to pay minimum wage for a 21 year old etc....He also has to pay if he wants to further himself now and start something new. It is so screwed up this country.... He did do the 13 weeks thing on the dole whereby they pay an extra £15 on top but that has finished now. We cannot afford to pay for him also.

Hi Marshallka I feel so sorry for our sons mine has already started his course and they told him today that if he doesnt pay the first £350.00 by next week they will kick him off the course, how harsh is that? He worked at Mcdonalds before college bless him he stuck it for nearly a year on £4.80 per hour and decided to go back to college so he wasnt stuck in a dead end job. What prospects have they got none if they cant get help to improve themselves, it stinks. What I dont understand is if he was under 19 he would get everything paid. What is the difference its still the same course wether he is 19 20 or 21. I am just hoping he can get help from the bank although it means getting into debt. I have tried to look up on the web about student loans and bursaries but they all seem to be for uni or under 18:confused:

Hi Pinknico I have looked on there and he has rung a couple of numbers, helplines but he hasnt got anywhere with them They did say that if he could do english and maths at a learning centre it would be free but the closest one to us is over 20 miles away and he has no transport. Thanks though I am doing a good search on the web tonight to see if I can find any other help. :D:T

Hi dialysis, we tried for the student loan thing when he was going to college (before the apprenticeship he did a BTEC in computers and then part way through the next bit) but they said that loans were given to those doing degrees only. My son was not and although full time at college he got nothing in regards to money. He then went self employed in the building trade and this was a nightmare and then took a young apprenticeship. They knew his age when they took him on and he only got £2 an hour for 12 months and then after the 12 months they had to pay him mimimum wage and being 21 then it was more than they would have to pay a younger apprentice. He was doing fantastic as well both in work and college although he did complain that he was not learning so much of the actual work he was supposed to be doing. It was more general dogs body and then when he reached 21 they got rid saying he was not suitable and onto the next young apprentice they went. We took this to a tribunal and they settled out of court and this was before I knew what i know now in that the solicitors took 25% and then also the firm that got him the solicitor also took 25% so he was left with next to nothing. From then on he has had no work and has applied for loads of jobs and he is lucky if he ever gets a reply. He did have an interview a couple of months ago at somewhere and also got into the final 7 but did not get on. He is now at a loss cause he has got qualifications but his apprenticeship was never completed and its knocked his confidence also. I feel so sorry for these young ones too. I have ranted on here a few times on the benefits thread too. My son tried to get on and passed what he went to college for with merits but still no-one want to employ someone of that age (with no experience) when they can get someone to do the job for next to nothing.

My one and only dream would to be my son in full time employment again. Its just so hard and it worries the life out of me.
