  • Happy New Year Steve, hope everyone is well. Tommorow is back to normal trading so today is last day for entries in Stockchallenge competition so if anyone wants to enter - http://www.stockchallenge.co.uk/

I did awful this year, placing 203 out of 400 entries.
All but 26 people lost money with their choices, I recommend entering just to learn how easy it is to get it wrong

Happy New Years Everyone. Hopefully. this year will go bit better for me compared to last year. My holdings is not doing very well. Roughly at annualised return of -3.73% since May 2009. :( On other hand, I just made my last investment in FKL, reckoning that they might benefit in long term should an oil company manage to pump oil out in Falkland Waters.

Since I am now more into saving into Cash ISA (for 2012-13) for now, I guess I would not be doing any more investing in 2012 apart from doing regular savings plan with a Fund. Unless I get excited about something so thus decided to invest in it *sighs*

    Either way, Happy New Years!

I had a small holding which I sold in December... just got a bit twitchy. Looking to get back in but don't want to buy at the current price. I'm hoping general market volatility will present a good opportunity in the coming months. 440p would be nice, but can't see it going back down to those levels. Anyone else got a target price in mind?

Goldman Sachs say £7.50, and who among us would ever dare to doubt such an infallible and erudite source?

The truth is that *no-one* knows how to value a company that's growing at >10% pa. So, you either ignore fundamentals, charts and analysts, and take a punt based on your understanding of the underlying technology, or you stick to companies where yield, p/e, p/b and all the rest give you a valuation you can compare against current market price.

Good point. I guess the standard metrics become pretty meaningless in this situation. I was happy to take a punt at 330p in August but less so at current prices. Suppose I'll just hold out and hope there's a drop to a level I'm more comfortable with.

Despite normal metrics not working for high-growth companies, you can use a "growing into their p/e" approach. For IMG.L this seems to have priced in 40%+ growth pa for the next 4-5 years, so while short-term dips could happen on rumours and speculation, it would be a growth pause that would cause a long-term correction.

Whoops. Sorry if that EMED was due to my terrible tipping. On the plus side, this year I'm REALLY convinced it'll all come right for them. :D And I've still got everything but the kitchen sink on it.

I'm pretty new to all this and haven't come a across a "growing into their p/e" approach. Seems like a good way of using available earnings data. In the case of IMG, 40% growth each year seems pretty unbelievable... didn't they recently report a 25% increase? That said, I don't anticipate a growth pause any time soon, so, assuming I'm happy with the high P/E valuation, I'd be looking for a dip to buy at a slightly reduced price. Hmmm... still not sure so I'll leave it on the watchlist for a while I think.
