we have a touran and it is very reliable. had the esp fault but it was fixed under warranty.

OP we are looking at selling our car if you are interested.

it is a 2.0 Tdi SE (140 BHP).

    see here:

    http://motors.uk.freeads.net/cars/volkswagen/541125/volkswagen-touran-2004-04-manual-diesel-33000-miles/view

mileage is now 34,000. will accept offers.
You got to get through what you've got to go through to get what you want but you got to know what you want to get through what you got to go through.
  • Just one point I did not mention is that the dipped lights are horrendous on the Verso in fact on the Avensis as well .if you do a lot of country roads try one out when its dark .

The Verso is made in Turkey and to be honest had no problems with it compared with the Avensis( steering racks ,oil burning issues, headlight bulbs melting in there holders and having to replace the light assembly) but must add all sorted out under warranty
  • Many thanks everyone - some really helpful comments there. We felt that the Touran was more 'solidly built' than the Verso, but the Verso was a nicer drive overall. I hadn't realised there were problems with the ESP on the Touran, but is this only on pre-05 models? The Verso is one of Motoring Which's top three MPVs. When I asked about the parcel shelf on the Verso though, the salesman said it's fine if 'you're good at Rubiks cubes', which is obviously a minor point but annoying if you want to hide stuff in the boot while shopping etc. Anyway, it will probably come down to which car we can get the best deal on, both the VW and the Toyota dealerships have several cars on their forecourt which would fit our criteria, but the VW seemed less willing or able to negotiate on price. KTuludays - thank you for the offer of your Touran, looks good but we're looking for a slightly newer car with lower mileage as we intend to drive it until it dies.

We bought ours new though an online broker, sorry can't recall the name at the mo. but basically shipped from Germany to the VW dealer at Pride Park in Derby and then put on a lorry down to us. We took the online price into the dealers where we test drove the model, and said we would buy from them if they could beat it, but they said that they couldn't buy for that price (which I don't believe but anyway). Think it worked out about £3k under list price. I'd imagine you'd get a cracking deal now on a new one.

ETA: Re. comments above, I've had two punctures on my Touran, both fixed fine with the repair kit but maybe I've just been lucky.

I have a 05 plated Touran, it is a very good car however I recently had the ABS/ESP warning light come on, and yes the ESP system was stuffed. I contact VW (UK) and they now recognise it as a common fault on some 05 and 55 models.
Because of this they replaced the unit for just over £200 as opposed to £1500.
Having test driven both Touran and Verso when I bought the car from new, I felt that the build quality was better along with solidity of the car eg ( the sound and feel of the drivers door when you close it). I would go for the Touran again.

You say VW recognise it as a common fault? Who did you speak too? Please could you let me know has we've the got the fault and all our conversations with VW have been less than positive.

As for the Touran, the newer models have had the ABS failure sorted, and we've found it to be a very practical car, but don't pay a premium for the VW badge. The Toyota's an excellent car, and look at the new Citreon C4 MPV.
  • toyota over vw any day, plus the toyotas dealers will treat you much better if you have any problems.

Isn't this just down to bad adjustment with the headlight aim too low?
My car (not a Toyota) when new came out the factory with the aim far too low, I just took it out on a level dark country lane one night and adjusted the aim height to sort it out.

Hi Buzzylizzy, we have gone from 6 year sceinic which was great, but developed loads of niggles in the last year. We looked at both the Touran and Verso and chose the Verso (older model, not the new 09 one). The car came with more (why should I pay extra for fog lights!?), and had a better build quality. The dealers at Toyota were much more customer focussed - VW didnt seem to bothered (one quoted very stong German market for VWs because they were getting an environmental discount for scrapping their older cars. We didnt want to wait 16-18 weeks for a car).
We collect the Verso on Wednesday

I think the chap i spoke to at VW was called Richard thru there Customer Services, he logged my problem and asked if I was looking for a goodwill contribution from VW, I of course said yes,he then said that he would get back to me within the next 48 hours with a decision.

In the meantime I had already informed the VW dealership that i got it from that i'd also be looking for a contribution from them. I have to say the dealership were very good, so much so the service guy told me that another Touran had been brought in that morning with the same problem.

Initially VW said that they would pay half of the costs which I refused, they cameback the next day and offered in conjunction with the dealer a 90% discount on parts and a 70% discount on labour, needless to say I accepted.

I may have been lucky,I think they based their discount on the fact that I bought the car new from the dealer and that they have done all the necessary work on the car, servicing, repairs etc.

Its worth having a look at the Touran forum on https://www.clubtouran.net there are a fair few on there with the same problem.

With regards to VW recognising the problem they said that they were aware of the issue with the 05/55 models but have not yet made it a recall issue. The fact that as soon as i told them what the problem was they offered to discount without me asking for it.
    hope this helps

    Cheers
