Toyota verso or VW Touran?

We have a 6-year-old Renault Scenic but would like a 7-seater car (3 children + their friends and various relatives). We're looking at either the Verso or the Touran (probably go for one around a year or two old with relatively low mileage) and have test-driven both. Anyone got any comments about either of these?

I have an (almost) 5 years old Touran - it has been absolutely brilliant. Like the 2 year service interval and nothing (touch wood!) has gone on it after 50k miles of happy motoring. Having said that, if the Verso had been available when we bought (it came out a few months later) I'd have considered that too. Depends how long you want to keep it (planning to drive mine till it dies) - does anyone buy second hand Toyotas?

Verso. Slightly bigger. Isn't there a thread on here about the ABS/ESP horrors on the Touran?

A friends mum had a Verso and they soon got rid of it after someone said to her son "Oh I saw your mum getting out of a car yesterday - I didn't know she was disabled..."

As for the Touran they are ok apart from the ABS module failing. Dashboard is a bit bland and it's like living inside a lump of coal...

We have had a Verso for 5 years now and it's a fantastic car! It's never given us any problems! It's very comfortable even with all seven seats being used!
  • Had a Verso diesel for nearly 3 years and never had any trouble with it !! dealer service is excellent!! . you can get a few rattles now and again on the car
The diesel is the one to go for !! avoid the MMTsemi auto at all costs
I am looking to change shortly and strangely I am looking at the new Golf plus or Touran because of the DSG gearbox.
I think if you look on any forum you will get complaints about the vehicle you are interested in as people only post when you have a problem

Not driven either but the Verso swings it for me "on paper" a big factor being it has a spare (space saver) wheel and the Touran has a tyre gel kit which are about as much use as a chocolate fireguard. I've lived without a spare wheel on a car an experienced the problems it can cause first hand. If you think you will never get a puncture then ignore this factor.
I perceive Toyotas to be more reliable, historically they appear higher in reliability surveys than VW's. On the other hand VW TDi diesels are excellent and that DSG gearbox is an absolutely fantastic piece of kit.
Conslusion, get a Verso diesel manual unless you must have auto, then the answer is a Touran with DSG.
  • not the vwover priced, problematic!
  • Have you considered the Citroen C Crosser 7 Seater. It is built by Mitsubishi so of high end build quality and safety.

At the moment it can be had for a very attractive rental and compared to the two mentioned above...I think you will get a higher spec car for less money.

    Hope this helps

I have had a 2.2 litre diesel Verso for over 3 years, it has been a great car very reliable servicing only. they are just about to launch a new verso in april...salesman been trying to encourage me to change. It is a little longer and sounds as if they have put to rights some of the niggles.

my only problems are the boot space cover is a pain to get on and off although it stores in the car when you don't need it. A bit frustrating when not always using the sixth and seventh seat.

there is no space if 7 people in the car

The ride is not to everyones taste does tend to roll.

have you looked at the s-max that came out just after i got mine, I have a friend who has one and it has a bigger boot space and the ride is a little better.

I have a 05 plated Touran, it is a very good car however I recently had the ABS/ESP warning light come on, and yes the ESP system was stuffed. I contact VW (UK) and they now recognise it as a common fault on some 05 and 55 models.
Because of this they replaced the unit for just over £200 as opposed to £1500.
Having test driven both Touran and Verso when I bought the car from new, I felt that the build quality was better along with solidity of the car eg ( the sound and feel of the drivers door when you close it). I would go for the Touran again.
