Just had a really embarrassing experience at my local Tesco’s. Have been going in for the past few years and using coupons towards my shopping. I always ask the Checkout Operator if I can use any of the coupons I have and never use too many at once. Asked the Checkout Operator today if I could use any of my coupons (not internet) but was told I could only use one as I had not bought the product. I asked was she sure as I thought it was one of each type of coupon, but she was adamant it was just one coupon in total. I asked was it a recent change, as I had regularly used more than one type of coupon, the last time being last week. She said it was in their Team 5 Bulletin and it had changed “months ago”. I asked if I could see a copy of it but she said I would have to go to Customer Services.

I apologised for holding up the queue, but asked if she could check it with someone else as I had used coupons there most weeks without a problem. She called the Checkout Supervisor over and said “This womans trying to use all these coupons (4!) but I've already told her we only take one .” . She was quite loud and people were looking. I felt really embarrassed by the way she was talking to me but I asked the Supervisor if that was one of each type and the Checkout Operator interrupted and said "No, just one coupon as I've already told you". The Supervisor left and I gathered my shopping, as I turned away the Operator snorted and made comments to the next customer about “people causing problems”. I felt really embarrassed but annoyed by her attitude.

I explained what had happened to Customer Services, and asked if they could check their Team 5 Bulletin regarding coupons, as I didn’t want to be in that position again - but they could not find it. They then said they would send for the Checkout Manager, who eventually came and said that coupon acceptance was discretionary but that in any case they would not accept more than 10%. I said I would have been happy if the Checkout Operator had accepted 10% of my coupons – which would have been £2.20, but she had only taken one at 75p. I said I was upset and embarrassed by her attitude and the way she had spoken to me and about me, to another customer. The Checkout Manager said she would speak to her about it!!

I won’t let this one bad experience put me off tendering coupons, but I do wish Tesco would train their frontline staff more thoroughly, if the Checkout Operator had been told there was a maximum of 10%, there would not have been a problem but even so, there was no excuse for her rudeness:embarasse

    Sorry it's so long
I am sorry you had this bad experience, I really sympathise as I
I have had this happen to me at Tescos a couple of times, it is very embarassing and annoying, and like you I only wanted to use a few coupons - I only save on average £3 with coupons if they are accepted. (incidentally I am amazed at the couponners who post on here saying they have saved ££80 etc on one shop, hats off to them, they obviously have a more sympathetic Tescos and they must also put a lot of work in collecting coupons and managing their shopping in a really clever way, it takes real commitment to do that! ) It is also amazing how every cashier seems to have their own individual interpretation of whatever policy there is - I have had cashier tell me one thing and then supervisor tell me something else - v tiresome.
Anyway, I was getting quite wound up about the coupon issue but now I just go with the flow, my Tesco recently seems to have made an effort to communicate a one coupon only rule to all the cashiers and it even seems there has been some adjustment to their tills so that the till refuses certain coupons if your spend is not high enough - this is just my impression, I may well be wrong...anyway, if I at least get one coupon off I try to be grateful and make sure it is a high value one...the only other alternative I have is to visit another Tesco further away which I hear still applies the national coupon policy, but when you take into account petrol and time spent.... as my OH keeps telling me, the best way to save money is not to spend it, and he does have a point... so while saving money with coupons is very gratifying, I am trying to keep it in perspective, and it's nice to feel free to shop at other supermarkets apart from Tescos!

Apart from going to the cinema with my OH and younger kids and taking my oldest DS to the swimming pool (like a good Mummy/taxi driver), I visited 3 different Supermarkets today.

Usual Tesco, spent about £30 and paid a penny.

Waitrose (to use up newspaper mocs), spent £9ish and paid a penny.

Asda (for a change as OH wanted one of their cheap suits for work), hadn't been there for a year or so. Tried to find the Huggies boxes with the right date for the £9 mocs but they only had the 04/2012 date. But DD found some Comfort mocs at the clothing desk, she didn't take them all (left one...).:D

Spent about £35 on clothing at a normal till in Asda and paid £30 because the nice lady accepted some cat food/Finish mocs! I couldn't resist asking if she could scan a coupon or two, and holding out a £2 Finish moc, assuming she'd say the policy changed etc etc...but clearly she didn't know this so I handed over 5 coupons in the end. I seemed to recall a 6th coupon causes the till to ask for authorisation at that store so obviously I didn't want a Supervisor called!

She wouldn't take internet prints so I had to use a real Finish moc original that I got from a swap on PTS - but I was pleased with the discount which I wasn't expecting to get, and I know Asda can get the money back.

    :T

Just thought I'd let people know that the Finish half price offer at £1.80 in Sainsbury's finishes (:rotfl:) on 12/5, for anyone using it to stock up on the actual product.

jonty03 I was saddened to read of your unfortunate experience at T's recently. Many of us have had similar experiences so please don't be put off by such rude behaviour. Don't take this rudeness personally, however hard that may be. You did nothing wrong, so please don't feel bad. Some staff are better informed than others and coupon acceptance is often a hit and miss affair. Keep trying and good luck with using your coupons.

I pressed the register button and after registering you get sent an email with a link which you have to click. You then login to the site and it then says print your coupon.

Great trip yesterday - really quiet but there wasn't many SA's on. As I walked up, I was looking at the SA's thinking: "...she only takes 3....she looks like an OT (sorry OldTrout!) ...doesn't look promising...etc." and then running out of options I pulled in at an oldish lady who then said "can you go to that one please" where a young lad was just taking up position, fantastic - he took every one of my coupons (19 in total) giving me over £21 off (including the puzzle mag for the first time) and then I got a till split for 75 points. :j
Does this sound familiar? Anyway, thanks again to all of you, I really enjoy this couponing lark.
If at first you don't succeed, try, try, try - oh bu99er that just cheat :D
