The easiest way to track down a financial services firm is to go here.

Enter the firm's name and you will either get its own entry in the FSA register or a list of names that include the words you have used to search so that you can select the correct one.

If the firm you are looking for is listed as an "appointed representative" that means somebody else was responsible for activities it did/does that are/were regulated by the FSA. You can find out who took that responsibility at any given time by clicking on the word "Principals".

However, for the purposes of PPI, the Principal is only responsible for activities on or after 14 January 2005. Prior to that the actual firm that advised you is responsible.

    That is the good news.

The bad news is that if the firm does not appear on the register at all then FOS will not be able to help you to complain against it.
  • thanks Magpie, that was very useful. But they werent there as you feared.
But i have since found an old statement :) If anyone wants to add it, but im not sure as the main offices appear to be in USA ???..

    addy in the uk :-

    People's Bank, Connecticut
    PO Box 5766
    Southend,
    Essex SS99 6BB

and says on the back of my statement:-

"People's Bank Connecticut registered in England, number :BR003302, is a branch of People's Bank. People's Bank is incorporated as a Savings Bank with limited liability in Connecticut USA. Its head offce is at
850 Main Street, Connecticut 06604, USA
and its stock is publicly owned.
    "

My statement says ive paid "cardholder repayment protection 9.25" for that month.. so i guess thats PPI.
Bearing in mind i THINK this account was taken over by Citi Bank who recently (last few months) have moved it on to Opus, any advice for me as what to do now would be great?
    Thanks peeps.
  • Oh the irony - I am pretty certain People's Bank had a Which? branded credit card about 15 years ago!

It is unlikely that Citi will have taken over its liabilities.

However, I suspect Which? would not have allowed its name to be associated with a bank that would not allow complaints to be referred to the Banking Ombudsman, as it was then, so going down the complaint to the bank then to FOS may work.

I had a burtons store card several years ago, which was managed by GE Capital at the time, then it changed to GE Money. But I've read that Santander Cards now own GE Money, although GE Money still exist. Does anyone know whether I should be writing to Santander Cards or GE Money to claim mis-sold PPI?
If you will the end, you must will the means.

    Hi there

As far as I am aware, you write to Santander, but if you did send to GE, they will forward this onto the above anyway, good luck.
