wonder what the next fashion will be? Hydroponics?
Yes nice and clean with none of that dirty earth stuff!0 -
Well, I have to garden in raised beds as the end of the garden is full of mature tree roots. It doesn't stop the roots getting through, but at least I can dig them out in my lovely raised bed soil.
I learned to garden from Percy Thrower on Blue Peter when I was a child and started growing veggies with Geoff Hamilton (he was Gardening God in our house!)
Nobody will ever match Geoff in my eyes!:D
However, I like Carol Klein and have enjoyed watching her since her Channel 4 days. I have also warmed to Alys, Joe and Tobey too.
My favourite alternative presenter has to be Bob Flowerdew because he is such an eccentric - I love it!supernanny62 wrote: »Back to the raised beds for veggies. can anyone please tell me is it best to plant in blocks or rows and should I practice crop rotation or is my proposed raised bed of 8'x4' too small for it to matter? Don't really like the format of Gardener's World but it has inspired me to get the raised bed so they must be doing something right!
Have you thought of using the square foot gardening technique? I have just split mine into 1ft squares so I can see how it works out compared with my usual yields. There is more information on squarefootgardening.com.
With smaller gardens now, I think SFG is likely to be the next huge fad (I know GW did it a while ago with the RHS but I think it will catch on more now). Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

Totally agree about the Whats hot whats not section. Seems so out of place on GW.
Perhaps they might start going further down the Top Gear template and start planning crazy challenges!!!lets not double dig lets use dynamite instead......and have a mystery presenter.
I like the starting a fresh with a new garden approach.
I do feel that I am watching cbeebies by mistake at times. Lots of the programming on BBC seems to be talking down at the viewer at the moment.
Just stick to the plants and it will all be good0 -
I've just watched the first programme that i'd forgotten I'd sky+d.
It does totally seem like cebeebies! (and a bit patronising at times) - it's fine to aim it a newbies esp as a lot of new people are thinking about growing your own, but credit us with a bit of intelligence!
And I hated the shed - massive bit of time filling IMO, in fact there seemed like a lot of filler like starting at the new site and digging it all up - do many newbies have a huge field that they can make into different gardens? Wish I had!!Just call me Nodwah the thread killer0 -
Me - I'm waiting for anything they put on about those with "more hope than space" - ie grotty tiny backyards and balconies....not to mention all those wasted roofs (I spot a lot of wasted flat roofs in my area  - just thinking how much food they could be growing....)0

Got one of his books & it's great - old freezers to store veg, polytunnels - lovely cat wandering around etc.0 -

... and now it's time for "Weeds in the Reasonably-Priced Seeds".
Some say he can pull couch grass out unbroken with just his teeth, but all we know is he's called "The Slug"...0 -

I think some great mystery presenters would be Geoffrey with Bungle, Zippy, and George:rotfl:~~~~~~~~~~~~Halifax, taking the Xtra since 1853:rolleyes:~~~~~~~~~~~~0 -
Forever a glutton for punishment, I just can't resist:oI'm going to watch tonight to see if Aly surpasses her stupidity of last week when she told people to use tin cans for growing plants in. Nothing wrong with that, but she kept the loose lids to ease the removal of plants from the tins by using the lid to push the plants up, and out. Does she have any idea how easy it is to trap fingers between a sharp tin lid and the inside of a tin? I do:pIt cuts your fingers and hurts because you can't push up to release your fingers, or pull down without cutting your fingers off.
I'll be back for a giggle later:D~~~~~~~~~~~~Halifax, taking the Xtra since 1853:rolleyes:~~~~~~~~~~~~0
