I've been left with about 3 mats but been advised to best get some more from mothercare but will need to get the plastic sheets. Got vit K injection and the one to speed up the placenta all here. Midwife told me I need to inform insurance company that I now have canisters on the property and display a warning triangle.

Maternity allowence isn't counted at all according to the tax credit booklet that came with my pack and SMP has the first £100 dis-allowed so might be worth checking

Do you know I thought that was the case, and I definitely told them on the phone it was Maternity Allowance, but she's put me down as earning the £3.76 a week.

Ah well, I'll wait until I get the new award, see what's on it, then if it is wrong, I can always let them know when I ring to let them know I've had the baby.

Maternity mats are cheaper in boots by 3p per pack ;) but pampers bed mats are the same thing and are cheaper from tesco/asda:money:
My MW said look out for them also being called incontinence mats as they are same thing too but usually cheaper.

Our MWs bring everything when they turn up so they'll be bringing, vit K, syno-wotsit for placenta, entinox, and a respirator just in case.

for plastic sheets I've had shower curtains recommended a few times and they are dirt cheap for asda smart price or in pound stretcher etc

ooh its a bit scary now!! I couldn't stop playing with the little tags last night tho, you know the blue/pink ones they put on ur wrist and babies ankles if you go to hosp, sooo cute!!

I take it you're happy to have those? I'm considering refusing both (vit K on the basis that if all newborns have low vit K levels then they are probably supposed to) and the placenta one on the basis that I want to do it all naturally and I trust my body to be able to get the placenta out in its own time.

Am I on my own with this? Anyone else want to deliver the placenta without the injection?

I put my trust in the professionals and do as I'm told lol

Skinty, I've said yes to the vit K because if they don't have it they're at risk of bleeding... I figure I'd rather it have 1 injection of a naturally occuring vitamin than heamorage (sp)...
And as far as the placenta is concerned.. I've said I would like the cord to stop pulsing before it is cut and then will have the injection to expell the placenta then...
A very proud Mummy to 3 beautiful girls... I do pity my husband though, he's the one to suffer the hormones...
Krystal is so smart and funny and wonderful I am struck dumb in awe in her presence.

well it doesn't really matter for me coz doesn't need organising before hand but Chris had vit K and I've chosen for bubs to have it too.
I'm at the moment saying I'd like to have natural 3rd stage and just see how it goes, if placenta isn't coming out after say 30mins then I may ask for syno-wotsit then.
I asked MW if there was any effect on healing times etc with not having injection and she said as far as she knew there hadn't been any studies done (she gave me a place to look and see tho, but I find it strange that they suggest you have this injection with no real reason for it except saving the MWs some time??)

I need to go do some housework (bleughr!)

I'll be taking the injection to deliver the placenta, my labour is going to be medical anyway so may as well. I barely noticed delivering it with DS1. Probably, I would have a very different view if my history was 'normal'.

I would have considered a natural third stage, but because of all the complications in the labour and pregnancy, and the fact that I was such high risk, it really wasn't recommended. Had it been uncomplicated and not risky, I'd have given it serious thought. We discussed it at the NCT classes, and I liked the sound of a natural third stage.

I tried natural 3rd stage with DS but ended up going back in after 2 days as some was left and I wasn't well.
