if it helps i got an engineering degree and never really use it though i suspect it has shaped my personality.

when i graduated mechanical engneering manufacturing is scotland was on its last legs and if you have done a broad degree like mecanical you pretty much need a couple of years training so found it hard to get a foot in the door of a company nt going bust.

on the plus side i was given a very transerable skill set so was able to gravitate to my current profession (still engineering but not much mechanical stuff) without much retraining.

I suspect the reason engineers are paid less is partialy an economic thing and also partialy a personality thing. You dont do an engineering degree for fun(1) so the people that do them are looking for chalenging and intersting jobs and thouse jobs can pay less than a tedius soul crushing one. I know I wouldnt trade my work history with somone punting houses or filling in loan applications.

Rightly or wrongly, there will be a backlash aimed at immigrants in this country if the recession hits deeper. and people will look at alternative political parties, Labour will lose the next election, due to the recession, the Tories seem incapable of making ground on Labour, and the LibDems will always be a party who pick up a few seats, so where will people put their X at the next election? Even today there was a warning from somebody in the Labour party about the gains being made by the BNP, and from all accounts it appears that "ordinary" voters are voting for them, not "thugs" as somebody mentioned earlier.

I would hazard a guess that "thugs" vote for all different parties. The police officer that recently killed the protester in London for instance, I dare say he voted.

As far as i am aware, no police officer killed anyone, from the video i have seen, he pushed somebody who appeared to be a little confrontational, the man stumbled and fell, but was still alive for sometime after, then passed away due to a heart attack.

If he wasn't "pushed" I dare say he would be here today, it didn't do him any favours.

One things for sure - you don't do an engineering degree to be in a class full of good looking women!

this is becuase ordinary decent people have in many ways been unplesaantly affected by immigration and see that the three main parties will do little about it.

I have always said that the three main parties will get no-where if they only attack and criticise the BNP - they need to understand WHY people vote for them - not just call their supporter s names.

I dont dispute that, but to allege that he was killed by a police officer is jumping the gun somewhat, official enquiry will establish the facts, and who knows what will be discovered? congenital heart disease? drug abuse? let the inquiry do its work before jumping on the anti-police bandwagon.
