I must be a really bad mother as my 2 never have any food after school, just dinner between 6-6.30. My daughter has a snack break at about 2pm (at special school) My son has lunch about 1pm. When they were little between the ages of 5-7 they had their dinner when they came home from school and then off to play outside. (they don't bother about the weather) bath and bed! Now they are older 10&12 they eat with us, they only ever have food between meals sometimes at the weekend or when we are on holidays. That way food is never wasted 'cause they are hungery.

Yes I do, hence the shape I am. I could eat all day!!!! But my daughter has such a poor appitite that she needs to be hungery to eat anything! My son could and would eat all day if we let him!! At the moment he his fine weight wise because he is very active. My family eat on the hour every hour (irish!!!) and have the waistline to go with it!! I really don't want the kids to become overweight, they can have fruit if they want after school, but they are never that hungry:confused: . My son does have a large pack lunch which he could if wanted to split over break time and lunch but he says he is no hungry. He does drink 5 pints of milk each day (skimmed)!

I've not made them but looking in my Marguertie Patten book she's got cheese muffins, cheese straws, cheese scone (notice a pattern forming?!), herb scones and vegetable scones. Not sure if any of them tickle your fancy.......

I hope I am not breaking any rules posting these so here goes:

    Cheese Muffins
    25g melted butter
    190ml milk
    2 small eggs
    85g cheddar cheese
175g SR flour with 1 tsp baking powder
    1 pinch salt
    1 pinch dry mustard powder
1 shake cayenne or black pepper

Melt butter, cool and then atter to milk, eggs and cheese.
Sift flour with baking powder, salt, mustard and pepper
    Blend this with cheese mixture.
Spoon into cases until 3/4 full.
Bake in oven on 200 degrees until well risen and firm. Best served piping hot.

    Cheese Scones

    225g SR flour
    1/4 tsp of salt
    25-30g butter or marg
    150ml of milk
    50g finely grated cheese
pinch of mustard powder & shake of pepper

Sift flour, salt, mustard, pepper and rub in marg.
    Add the cheese.
Gradually add the milk to give a soft rolling consistency and place on floured board.
Roll out until 2cm in thickness.
Cut out and brush with milk for glaze.
Cook on 220 degrees until form to the touch.

    Herb Scones
Same receipe as above but omit the cheese.
Add 1-2 tablespoons of finely chopped parsley or coriander or chives after the flour and marg have been rubbed together.
Use only 1-2 tsps of more strongly flavoured herbs such as rosemary or basil or thyme.

    Vegetable scones
    Use receipe as above.
Add 2-3 tbsp finely grated carrot or shredded leek after flour and marg rubbed in.
You can keep the cheese added to this receipe if you so desired.

    Cheese Straws
    115g Plain flour
    Pinch of salt and pepper
1/2 to 1 tsp English mustard powder
    115g butter
    85g parmesan cheese, finely grated
    1 yold from medium egg
1 egg white or egg for the glaze

Sift flour with seasonings and rub in butter until mix is like breadcrumbs.
Add cheese and mix in the egg. If dough seems sticky wrap in clingfilm and chill for about 30 mins.
Roll out dough until about 6mm thick and cut into long fingers. Put onto greased trays.
Brush over straws with glaze and bake until firm and golden in colour on 220 degrees.

Details taken from The Basic Basics Baking Handbook by Marguerite Patten.

Hope they taste as good as they sound!!!
