Some really good suggestions on here! I think I will be using some for my own snacks!

How about cubes of cheese in a tub with cubes of pineapple (tinned if cheaper). Classic combo!

Thanks for all the suggestions, the school says no crisps, chocolate or biscuits and frubes seem very expensive, I do like them to have the fruit but it does get warm and squishy in thier bookbags! Cheese straws and scones sound like a good idea so i'm going to try them this week x

instead of putting it in their book bags, as i'm sure any kinda of food in the book bag could be at risk of leaking or damaging their book's. why not put an ice pack in a insulated lunch bag and put fruit in there. then won't go warm and get squished by their book's.

Frubes are VERY expensive at £2 a pack... But Choobs are only £1 a pack!! My son says two of the three flavours are better in the Choobs anyway!!!

Edit: Oh and I have one of those insulated lunchboxes, and my son's banana and apple don;t get squashed... I wrap the apple in newspaper... and the banana always goes on top... with the frozen foods the whole lunchbox stays cold.

He also has cold fruit juice (counts as 1 of your 5 a day) in a bottle... which again keeps things cool!

I hated warm lunches as a child!!!

i've never brought choobs or frubes( am i right in thinking they are the fromage frais in a tube which you suck out ? ). but whats wrong with a little fromage frais and a spoon. you can buy the value ones for 45p for 6, or dearer brands at about 99p for 6. My eldest son doesn't drink milk or like cheese that much, but he will happily eat one of these every day in his lunch box.

DD is only allowed fruit Mon - Thurs for snacks ...

So, we tend to do a combo of :

    Grapes
    Raisins
    Dried Apricots
    Cherry tomatoes

She likes something fast and easy, doesn't want to distract from PLAY time :)

Friday's she can have what she wants ... but normally has fruit flakes covered in yoghurt *can't remember the make, sorry.

I think it's a shame, because whilst not wanting her to have stuff full of sugar /salt etc., I'd love it if I could make her say blueberry muffins or suchlike.

    Good luck :)

I do agree with you... only my mum used to send me to school with them and they were warm by the time they got to school. This made very sick! I HATE yogurt even today!

Therefore, Choobs are the one thing I treat my son to... because I freeze them and put them in his lunch frozen in the morning and they act as an icepack so his lunch doesn't get warm.

I know this is 'expensive' but when you are making the rest of the lunchbox from scratch (ie. HM scones or cheese straws instead of 'cheese strings' and 'biscuits') this is one expense I am willing to do.

I mean what's 55p for peace of mind (for me?) I just make cuts elsewhere in my weekly food budget!

  • Choobs also mean that you don't have to spend a fortune replacing spoons the children loose at school...

Or have to buy plastic ones!

Or have to remove a dirty spoon from the lunch box...!!! YUK!

  • Hi, I make up big batches of vegetable samosas and they take a couple of these a day. They are easy to eat and make a change from sandwiches.
