  • Thanks for all the suggestions, the school says no crisps, chocolate or biscuits and frubes seem very expensive, I do like them to have the fruit but it does get warm and squishy in thier bookbags! Cheese straws and scones sound like a good idea so i'm going to try them this week x

Fruit cake is filling and delicious - if you made it in a square tin, you could cut it into square chunks which travel better than pointy slices. Also carrot cake (cut into square pieces, then freeze - take out of freezer in the morning and it'll be perfect by lunchtime), home made shortbread, bread pudding...

I make my son (who isn't yet at school) hot cross buns (without the crosses) and sugar and dairy free flapjack and sausage rolls (he's allergic to dairy, egg and soy so the range of foods is somewhat limited). He has a morning and afternoon snack - at one of these he will have fresh fruit and the other will be something a bit more filling like the above.

My daughter likes carrot sticks and cucumber strips. I've been buying frubes recently as a lot of the supermarkets have had them on offer for a £1. Tou could also give them a tub of cherry tomatoes.

Can you share the dairy free flapjack recipe? :)

Well, I call it flapjack as it has oats and fruit in :p I won't pretend it tastes like the usual syrupy, buttery flapjack but it is perfectly pleasant (I sent it to the childminders in place of birthday cake for DS, and all the children hoovered it, so it can't be too bad).

    100g oats
100g ready brek (I use ready brek as it has added vitamins and minerals, but you could use all oats, or put some of the oats in the food processor to get a coarse oat flour)
175g raisins (or other chopped dried fruit - I often add apricots and figs for added calcium and often soak the fruit in calcium enriched orange juics)
50g veg oil (yes I weigh it for some unknown reason)
75g fruit spread (I use one of the varieties of this from H&B)
    15g dessicated coconut
big pinch of cinnamon or mixed spice
few drops of orange oil or zest of an orange

Whiz fruit, fruit spread and oil in a food processor until the fruit is roughly chopped. Add other ingredients and whizz until mixed. put in a greased baking dish (I use oil to grease it) and bake at 180 for about 15 minutes until lightly browned.
