Then you need to read a fabby book called "Thrifty Ways for Modern Days" or search on this thread and you'll see there is an option to use value washing powder. I'm just brave enough to dive straight into this one.

Yes, I've seen that option. But as I already gave up using washing powder 10+ years ago, I really don't want to have to start buying it again.
Thrift ways book - is that Martin's book? I've got that one on order from Amazon.TL0 -
Yup that's the book, its great! And it lets me get my MSE fix when I can't be near a computer too. :rotfl::j Go on, shake your money maker! :j0

I tried the washing powder but I realy didn't like that-the dishes smelt realy strange and werent clean-no rinse aid or salt I suppose. Also tried half a tablet and wasnt happy either. The powerball ones I found were awful-they didnt dissolve properly and left sludge all down the door of my new d/w. So I dont put them in the dispenser anymore-i just chuck them in the d/w. Best combination is lidls d/w powder and salt and rinse aid(as of years ago). The new tablets are no better than the cheapo ones of years ago and I only ever get them if they are bogof AND work out cheaper than an own brand. I'm on 3rd d/w over a 25 yr period-never had the salt problem-that realy is rare.Annual Grocery budget 2018 is £1500 pa £125 calendar month £28.84 pw for 3 adults0

I did try leaving the wrapper on but thought the only way to split the table then would be to smash it, which aways seems to leave the ball bit on one side only.
We've got really hard water where I live so don't think we could do without tablets with salt etc. in them - which I don't think the yellow tesco's powder has. Or am I missing a trick here and buying more products than I need too?
I've got a dishwasher over 10 years old made by Neff. It's got a dial on the inside of the machine to adjust for hard water. It's only about 1cm wide. Do you have one of these?
I'm with the other poster's though on dishwasher powder and salt. It's much much much cheaper. I do use salt though and rinse aid. Probably only put salt in twice a year. No problems so far. Hope you find a cheaper solution that works for you.0 -
halloweenqueen wrote:Lidls dishwasher powder, £3.79 for 3kg - I think. Beats finish tablets even with their powerballs !?! hands down. it makes glass sparkle like nothing else! I don't put salt in the dishwasher I have a water softener instead, helps the washing machine and shower too.
I completely agree with that, we have to use a bit more powder than normal but everything comes out lovely & clean. I don't think I'll use any other powder now0 -
i bought a box of 24 (with 20% free but am not sure if that means more than 24 or not!) in poundland today (4 in 1 lemon tabs). when i took them out of the box to add to my old box they were in exactly the same packet as the tesco ones i've been using. i only use half and always buy on special (i think last time i got BOGOF 48s which i've been using for about 18 months!)Mum to gorgeous baby boy born Sept 2010:j0

I was told that you should always run the dishwasher immediately after topping the salt up so that the salt doesn't have time to corrode anything before it gets going.I like cooking with wine......sometimes I even put it in the food!0
