Yea that looks like an adsl filter faceplate to me (apologies if this has already been posted but i cant be bothered to re-read the thread).

Still just one phone line, so I'd say that crackling could be a problem.

macman see as my adsl and telephone signals are separated, would it really matter if there was a telephone fault ie. crackling?

I'll ask TalkTalk to check it out anyway.

Yes, of course it would. You signals are only filtered from the socket to the router. From the socket to the exchange they're on the same cable again. If there is noise on the line then this affects both the voice and the ADSL data.
And why put up with a crackling phone line?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Looks like we are getting there.
Try doing a quiet line test:
    Quiet Line Test

Unplug any extention phones, extention cables, answer machines or fax (anything except the phone you will use to do the test!).

Plug a normal touch tone phone directly into the BT master socket.

Dial 17070, press option 2 (quiet line test)

You should hear 'Quiet Line Test' and then silence, there should be no pops, clicks, whistles, buzzing etc. If there is noise on the line, make sure it's not your phones connection to the socket (wiggle it about a bit) and that you are using the master socket.
Then get on to BT and report the problem.
What ever you do don't tell them you are having broadband problems as they will just refer you to your ISP.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

Remember I'm on TalkTalk, will the 17070 still work?

Try it, I thought that it was only your broadband on Talk Talk.
Do you pay them for your line rental as well.

OK Then you will indeed have to take it up with Talk talk.
BTW I assume you realise its possible that you cannot transfer to another ISP if you take both your phone and broadband from Talk Talk, and they are supplied over Talk Talks' LLU network
It would be necessary to move the phone back to BT first.
