So if they aren't HLTAs can the HT temporarily make an ordinary TA an HLTA for the time that they are teaching? That is what the HT is planning to do. ie they are an ordinary TA whilst they are working with the teacher, but if they cover lessons they are paid as an HLTA but aren't actually HLTAs.

Ah and here's the rub you see - while 'guidance' suggests no TA should be given sole charge of any class without at least a level 3, and preferably a level 4, qualification, there is nothing enshrined legally to prevent such a thing. So yes, technically your Head can 'get away with' upping the pay and 'status' of a level 1 TA and putting them in sole charge of a class. Any other profession would be marching on their professional body, but when this sort of 'cover' became possible, hardly any teachers did more than murmur and moan - reap and sow spring to mind.

He probably doesn't. He's probably hoping you'll reapply as a TA - quite a few NQTs are doing just that as they can't find a full time secure teaching job! Cheeky !!!!!! - I'd be up in arms if my own kid's school tried this sort of stunt. Not enough parents realise what's going on though.

As I got a First Class degree in teacher training, I am not going to waste it by being a TA - no disrespect to TAs but I spent years training to be a teacher!

I know a lot of teachers having to get work as TAs or Cover Supervisors because of the job situation.
