my MOH lives in Arizona in USA and she is currently making all the decorations for our cake (we are just buying plain cakes and she is decorating them when she comes over) - our cake is having personalised things on them and will look similar to this

    http://www.cakecentral.com/cake-photo-51971.html

she asked us things to add to the cake which are personal to us (within reason) - I just love this cake design :)

That is such a great idea - will add a lovely element of humour as well, it's really good of her to make the decorations for you - can't wait to see your finished personalised one!!:j

How much did the stuff cost - how many blocks did you need?

Did you get any help/inspiration to get you started?

    D'you mean the Fimo clay?

I got quite a lot of the stuff, but I am planning on having enough to make 5 people. Got large blocks of white, flesh, red & black, then loads of little blocks of various colours.

Think it cost around £40 for the clay. What made me decide to try my own was a thread on here - someone had posted a link to a toppers site, around £100 for a pair of figures (fantastic stuff!) and I wanted them but couldn't justify that amount, so I thought I would give it a bash.

    Oh wow - really :j
Yes, that's where I ordered my clay, I'm so pleased you are enjoying it

I never thought bout using foil as a stuffing, that's a great tip - would use much less clay as well. I just used clay for the lot, but your way would be cheaper.

When attaching the heads I put a cocktail stick through the body and spiked the head on for more security (also done the same with OH's legs)

How are you getting on with the skirt? I found that the hardest part to roll out and keep flat because of the expanse - think it took me 3 attempts :o

Yep! So thank you very much :D The foil thing is fairly good but don't roll it too thin as it can crack :o Also had to wrap foil around the foil, as when scrunched it's "prickly". Yep, I've used cocktail sticks for both our heads and his legs - you really do need that extra stability! well, my skirt has been fairly easy to do as the train is short and wrapping it around the foil was easy (made the shape of my body so just have to ease it into the shape - easier said than done for the waist!) - the boobs are the worst bit, and making the flesh shoulders and above (well, easy enough to make, a different story trying to meld it to the top of the dress ) Feeling ill atm so don't feel up to doing it, but need to crack on with it!

ecoelle, your envelopes are gorgeous, that's really effective!

I bought DIY Wedding by Kelly Bare and The DIY Bride by Khris Cochran which have lots of ideas and how-tos. I think they've been more inspiration for me as I haven't actually made anything from them, but they are lovely books and appealed to me more than a lot of the traditional wedding books I got out of the library.
Got married 23rd May 2009, many thanks to all on the Weddings and Anniversaries board for their help and support!
