Dell has just produced a different spec machine at a different price, and all the complaining to Watchdog will not make a blind difference to the legal position. The previous deal expired over a week ago.
The point is they ARE breaking the law with lies, saying the machine will not work on the internet unless you have there expensive memory upgrade, & putting the phone down if you don't upgrade. Selling tactics like this are illegal, & they are no better then conmen who sell unnecessary building work to old ladies.Next year we'll be millionaires!0 -
Hi
Dithering about whether to get it. I need a laptop that I can edit on with Avid Xpress pro-not sure if this laptop is good enough for this purpose. If it needed upgrading to support video editing would it be expensive? If any of you guys can help that would be appreciated. Because I Will get it of it does trhe job.0 -
I have just ordered - first time, no problem at all! I can confirm it is wireless enabled.0

I would really advise against it for that purpose. Video editing is one of the most resource hungry jobs you can do on a PC and you honestly need something with a much higher spec, including a dedicated graphics card and lots of memory. Rather than trying to upgrade one of these, you would be better starting off with a more powerful machine. Sorry!0 -
OK.
I have placed an order. It took 35mins on the phone. Dell are HORRIBLE.
First of all I had a problem because there was no e-VALUE code on the offer. This was DELIBRATELY left out on the advert in the telegraph. I told the salesman I wanted NO OPTIONS (other than ones stated) but he kept telling me I needed them and asking the same questions. Talk about aggressive sales talking. I did the upgrade to 15.4" and 6 cell battery, plus 1 yr warranty (he sold me that one, only 23squid). Total of 374. But, according to the salesman, apparantly I am buying a very slow computer and won't be able to upgrade things (like memory) in the future.
Dell's sales tactics are shameful.0 -

you can't upgrade the processor (at least not easily, if at all), the hard drive wouldn't be cost effective to upgrade, it's not got a firewire port, but you could get the memory up to 2gb in theory (dell say maximum is 1256mb for some reason)
I'm not an expert and I've only just dipped my toe into putting video onto my pc, but from what I've read it's a case of the fastest processor you can get, the most memory and plenty of hard drive space. this laptop is probably not a good option, nor is any laptop from a value for money point of view. you'd get a much better video editing set up with a desktop machine. assuming you're using a miniDV camcorder or some other digital format, ignore the need for a great video card, concentrate on memory, procsssor and hard drive.0 -
Does anyone know what warranty is with this Del 1300 and does this offer finish today?
Is it in any of todays papers??
Cheers

I can confirm that we have now managed to order a laptop from Dell. I got my OH to ring in the end and he got a really nice lady. She did transfer him for a while to a hard selling male colleague but we did manage to buy without any unnecessary upgrades/payments.
We will just have to wait to see what we get now.
Thanks for everyone's help and advice on this.0 -

For the £299 price it is 90 days collect and return warranty.
Offer is a 'Weekend Special', no end date given but assume today.
Don't know about today's papers, sorry.

Dell's not going to produce a new machine every week to match a particular offer.
And just because the one you order off their website is wireless is absolutely no guarantee that the one advertised in the Telegraph (which has no e-value code) will have the same specification.
My reply was pointing out the strict legal position which is that Dell can state quite honestly that this is not the same offer as the previous one which expired on 24th February.
And in some ways Dell are right - this is a basic machine with limited upgrade paths available. But if you're happy with that just stick with your guns and go for it.You don't get medals for sitting in the trenches.0
