What is Blu Ray? I am considering getting a PS3 for my sons. They are saving their pocket money, and DH and I have agreed to match them for half of the total price. They are total PS2 fans, so natural progression is the PS3 (they are age 10 and 13), so would play games on it and watch DVDs as it will be in their bedroom.

i would only get one if you fancy the hd picture of blu ray movies. if you arent really that bothered about blu ray then go for a xbox 360.

I've got both, well I've got all three cos we have a Wii as well - the PS3 of all of them gets probably the least use but that's mainly as the 360 has the good RPGs that have come out lately. In terms of reliability, not sounding like a hoover while running and the stuff I can do on it though - I prefer the PS3 all round and the picture quality on it is remarkable.

We've got all three though as we've got different games we're into that are console exclusive - oh is a Metal Gear Solid nut which is the main reason we bought the PS3 (well that and the next Final Fantasy which is coming out on 360 now anyhow). The thing I don't like with the 360 is that I'm never quite sure whether it's going to work or not when I switch it on.

In terms of reliabilty - both have broken down and had to go in for repairs - while Sony did a straight courier swapover of consoles, Microsoft insisted our console was out of warranty based on its guesswork on when it was dispatched from their depots and we had a heck of a fight to prove it was still under warranty (it died a week before the warranty ran out). In the end it got sorted but had to go off to be fixed and took about a fortnight to come back and their computers insisting the warranty was out when it wasn't was just an added pain in the rear.

We still have a PS2 lying around to play old games on - because there are some very good games out there that are still worth playing again and again (heck we still play classic PS1 games occasionally) and I really wish they'd kept the backward compatability in the PS3 because that smacked of cost-cutting cheapskateness.

nope, they would buy the thing that is best value for the time they will use it.

a ps3 is basicly a box for playing computer games, an xbox 360 is a different box that plays for the most part the same games and costs less.

given the name of the site we are on its hardly a surprise people would offer an option to save cash.

The PS3 isn't "simply a box for playing games"
    It has the following functions
    -internet browser
    -mp3 ripper and player
    -blu ray player
    -standard dvd player
    -photograph viewer
-can be used as a media centre in a home network
-replaceable hard drive means it can be used as a storage facility for photos/music

Never having owned an xbox i couldn't list its functions but i do know that it does not play blu ray movies, nor does it allow online play for free. Surely on a money saving site an annual fee of around £40 must be taken into account?

Given that most people will own their console for a number of years, a £300 ps3 with, lets say 5 years online play and an included blu ray player is better value than an xbox 360 costing £160, plus £200 for the online play plus another £120 approx for a blu ray.

I reckon that makes the xbox 360 around £480 while the ps3 is around £300.

Am i missing something that the xbox does that makes it better value than i'm quoting?

Blu-ray delivers a high definition picture, especially good viewing on a 40"+ HD tv (you can actually count hairs & blades of grass:cool:). Don't worry about the internet killing it as it'll be many years yet before the network here is fast enough to make it worthwhile to download & store HD movies + the fact most people like to have a virtual copy to show for their money. As they're Playstation fans then the PS3 is a natural choice for them, they can play free demos downloaded from the store & the upscaling DVD is excellent. Their PS2 games won't play on it unless you source an older 60gb model although all PS3's now play Singstar PS2 games as long as you have one of the PS3 Singstar games.......;)

    P.S. don't feed the Xbox troll.........
What if the Hokey Pokey really is what it's all about !!!

you missed one thing off that list - it can be used as a computer

install yellowdog linux or ubuntu then you have a pretty powerful computer as well as a games console

Well, I bought it! Got LBG and GTA5, got it from GAME. I did go into HMV and asked if I could change the games they offered in the bundle and was told "NO", so turned around and spent my £310.00 next door. Silly !!!!!!s. Loving it so far. Am I right that when I put my HDMI cable in (so far I'm using what came with the box) the picture will be even better? HDMI cable due to arrive tomorrow, or tuesday. Looking forward to borrowing Resident Evil!!!!! Wife's going bed in a bit, so GTA5 ready to load up..... LOL. Thanks for all the advice.

Oh, while I'm on, does anyone have any advice about getting wireless internet sorted from Virgin, so I can crack on with online gaming? I already have cable bet to the house (into another room), but a friend tells me they would give me wireless for no extra cost? Same guy that was wrong about the gold HDMI cable, though, so not too confident!

If they won't give you one all you need is a wireless router so nothing to worry about there.

you did right walking out if they wouldnt change any of the games. i guess some stores are better than others. hdmi will give a better picture but when you connect it up and turn it on you will need to go into the display settings and click either automatic or custom. automatic should detect the best resolution your tv can do. if it doesnt then go into custom instead and tick all the resolutions you know your tv can do. remember only do this after you have the hdmi cable and it is connected, dont go doing it now.

I'm now trying to sort out the wireless router. Virgin tried to charge me £40.00, so I've looked on ebay and the above seems ok? Can someone please confirm that this is what I need? Thanks very much.
