My boyfriend has a laptop, on which we use Windows 2000. Internet Explorer had been coming up with an error every time we tried to use it, and someone suggested that I uninstall Explorer, and then reinstall it, which I did, but it didn't work. I have run virus checks and found nothing. So I thought I would uninstall Explorer, restart the computer and then reinstall it. Except now I can't restart the computer! I keep getting a blue screen with the following error message:
*** STOP: 0x0000007B (0x818B51B0, 0xC00000010, 0x00000000,0x00000000)
INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE
If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen,
restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow
these steps:
Check for viruses on your computer. remove any newly installed
hardware or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive
to make sure it is properly configured and terminated.
Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive curruption and then
restart your computer,
Refer to your Getting Started manual for more information on
troubleshootingStop errors
I can't check for viruses as it suggests because I can't get the computer to start up. Don't have a manual either. I've searched the error on the internet but none of the solutions make sense to me as I know virtually nothing about computers. Can anyone help? Haven't told BF yet and I think he will be cross. If I can get this fixed I will never, ever mess with the computer again, I promise.

got the feeling explorer is a built in part of windows, do you have a recovery disk for the LaptopEx forum ambassador

Sorry, I didn't realise there was a techie board. Happy for this to be moved if necessary. I did try the Safe Mode last night. I also tried pressing F2 to select a boot device and tried each of the 6 options, as well as all the other options in the F8 menu. Don't know if we have a recovery disk, I'll have a look later before BF gets home.0

When you say you uninstalled explorer, was it Internet Explorer and how did you do it?
You're probably looking at a reinstall of Windows 2000 I'm afraid.0 -
Yes, Internet Explorer. I went to the control panel and opened Add/Remove Programmes, and took it off that way. Sorry if I sound dense, outside of IT I can be quite intelligent! So, does this mean I need to find a disk with Windows 2000 on it, assuming we have one? What do I do when I switch on the computer, given that I get this error message every time?
Thanks everyone for your help.0 -
I don't mean to alarm you, but my work PC did exactly the same thing this time last week.
I am now sitting here on a brand new computer. After 2 days trying to fix my PC, our IT bod concluded that the boot sector was gone and the only thing he could do was take my hard drive our and run it in another computer so I could save my files off it.
He also tried to reinstall Windows 2000, but the boot sector wouldn't even allow him to run the CD in the first place.
Good luck getting things sorted - hope your blue stop message doesn't turn out to be as terminal as mine was

looks like you cannot deleted internet explorer from SR2 versions of Windows2000, that may be your problem
if you have a Windows2000 disk you may be able to do a repairEx forum ambassador

looks like you may need to run Chkdsk, but you need to get into DOS to run it
type CHKDSK /F if you can get into dos

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. I fear it is not good... However your saving grace might be that the cause of this could be out side of your control
If correct uninstalls of software causes a system to give you a bluescreen of death (we like our fancy terms in IT
) then there is a good chance the problem was definitely there, probably either a bad sector on the hard drive or a corruption of the operating system. It would have merely been a matter of time before it crashed and in your defence it was sheer bad luck it happened to go wrong when YOU were on the laptop
What to do next... Look for your recovery disk. But if possible svae the data from the hard drive by getting a geeky friend to set it up as a slave drive and salvage what data he can
Now it's not 100% certain it's a hard drive issue (software or hardware) it CAN be a memory problem. So check and see if you have 2 sticks of memory in the laptop. First remove one and try to boot, then swap round and see if that helps. Also worth trying the memory in different slots incase it's an actual hardware failure connected with the slot the memory is in.

Had a look in the Microsoft Knowledge Base, here you go:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324103
So that error code is reported as possibly:
- A Virus
- a missing device driver used during boot
- Corrupt registry
Having said you removed IE, it's most likely one of the latter two. Your best bet is as Browtoa suggests, and use a recover disk.
I'd firstly, before doing anything though, try and recover any important files."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0
