I always feel sad for whippets, they never seem to "smile" like other dogs do.
I still think you are much better off getting an older dog with a known character.0 -

A "farm breeder"? What sort of term is that? If you mean someone who is churning out pups as a side line from the family pet - you are talking backyard breeder. Puppy farmers are those nasty creatures who have a whole industry in breeding dogs and cats- with no regard to animal welfare - and none of the animals are pets. Just lept in barns or crates in sheds being bred till they are too knackered to breed from.
And call it a puppy farmer or backyard breeder, anyone who is selling pups from barns where its spent all its life is NOT a reputable breeder0 -

Also both breeds tend to hate being alone, and beagles let you know this by making a lot of noise... howling and wailing!
My friends boxer destroyed the settee and removed a couple of door frames when he was left alone...
Will someone be home all the time for the first couple of months? If not, I would strongly advise against a pup, expecially this cross.
Was there only one pup born? that is quite unusual. I presume it was an accidental mating?
I have had abeagle and spent more time chasing it through rivers than anything else - good fun though:rotfl:0 -

Ok let me rephrase it..I got my puppy from a farm. It wasnt a puppy farm. It wasnt a farmer who had diversified into breeding. It was a farmer who owned a farm whos' pet dog had got pregnant and had pups. He understandably couldn't keep all the pups and sold all of them bar 1 which his daughter kept as her pet.
So to clarify, my puppy who is no longer a puppy isn't from a puppy farm but is from a farm. The farmer who I bought her from has since had his female dog spayed after she had her one and only litter.
So please don't jump down my throat. I do NOT advocate puppy farming and would never buy a pup from a puppy farm.
Sheesh I can see why people are starting to avoid this board.'' A man who defends himself, has a fool for a client''0 -

Sorry if you thought that, I really wasnt jumping down your throat at all.
I was just pointing out there was no such thing really as a " farm breeder", and if you thought I was saying you got yours from a puppy farmer, I apologise. However your post did sort of make it sound like he was diversifying into breeding from the family pet, which as I said would make him a back yard breeder. Im glad you havent done that and you have come back and explained the situation.
But my post still stands on the differences (even though I wasnt accusing you of anything at all)0 -

Our puppy is the same. Their family pet labrador got at one of the working collies

Maybe we should promote responsible puppy breeding, rather than argue about what is and isn't a 'puppy farmer' a 'farm breeder' or whatever.
A responsible breeder will be able to give you very good reasons why they chose to match that particular Dad to Mum. They will have started to socialise the puppies already, including household machinery, children, rides in the car, unusual noises etc. They will be happy to provide a piece of bedding (or at least you provide the bedding and they put it with the mother and litter before you take the puppy home). they will be happy to take the pup back at any stage in its life, with a view to finding it a new home. They will probably ask you more questions about you and your experience with dogs and your lifestyle than you could ever ask them.........
If one or more of these don't apply, you may well have been encouraging irresponsible breeding when you purchased your pup. Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0 -

Raksha, I so agree with you on this. Every time someone comes on here asking about getting a puppy I do point them in the direction of going about frinding a respnsible breeder, advising that they keep away from small adds and go via breed clubs and giving tips on how to pick a good breeder
Unfortunately the anti breeding brigade do tend to shout down such posts only advocating getting pets from rescues and implying all breeders are devils spawn adding to the problem of dogs in rescues
